Česká spořitelna (ČS) is the bank with the longest heritage in the Czech market. With around 10,000 employees in more than 400 branch offices, it is the leader in many areas of banking products and services. Due to the high number of applications, end user devices and data, ČS was experiencing challenges managing everyday operations and maintaining its IT. Each branch had its own IT administrator whose tasks, in addition to user support, were to supervise the regular synchronization of data coming from the branch file servers to the datacenter and the local support of all applications.
ČS employees rely on speed and responsiveness from its IT systems, which was problematic due to the limited availability of broadband connection in some locations. This problem gradually increased with the arrival of a new generation of demanding web applications. At the same time it was critical to maintain the security of the environment for both employees and contractors while logging in and accessing the system from outside the office.
The solution to this challenging situation came with the virtualization of end points using Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops.
The transformation project has gradually consolidated file servers from the individual branches to two data hubs, standardized the process of application changes and enabled new methods of secure access to sensitive information.
Desktop virtualization has introduced a new way of working, which is the same in various different access scenarios. For example, home office users work in the same way as in the office so there is no need to create and maintain complicated user instructions and manuals as the company’s needs change rapidly.
The centralization of app operations eliminated many tasks the IT administrators had to deal with, freeing up their capacities. Security zoning for remote privileged access is another key value add – due to security reasons, administrators of internal systems are not allowed to use their own workstations for administering production systems. Without this solution they would have been equipped with another device just for administration. With the help of Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops, they are able to access both user and administrator environments from a single physical device.
Desktop virtualization using Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops has removed the current branch dependency on local IT infrastructure thanks to the creation of a central repository for all data. It also eliminated the complicated solutions for data synchronization, backup and security. The result is a reduction of costs and increased data integrity and security.
