MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company is a leading family-owned global shipping and logistics company with over 900 vessels serving 300+ routes worldwide. Expansive growth since its founding means that MSC now spans 675 offices across 155 countries, and in that time the company’s technology infrastructure had understandably become fragmented, with separate on-premises systems across its global operations. “With teams using different applications there were challenges staying in sync and ensuring all teams had access to critical data when they needed it,” explains Quentin Drion, Senior IT Director of Infrastructure & Operations, MSC.

Unifying a fragmented IT infrastructure

As a vital link between continents and people, MSC recognized that its IT systems needed to be reworked to best serve the evolving needs of its global customer base. In a fast-changing and competitive industry, the company saw an urgent need to upgrade. It required centralized, secure access to critical applications, along with greater visibility and control across its environments. MSC’s vision was to move from decentralized local systems to a unified global cloud environment, capable of meeting customers’ demands worldwide.

Enabling secure, workplace flexibility

Citrix has long been a trusted partner for MSC. In the last five years, the relationship has deepened into one involving daily collaboration with direct access to product developers. This close engagement allows MSC to give input at the development stage, ensuring that solutions meet precise needs. Most recently, the collaboration has supported MSC’s shift from standard application publishing to secure private access—a change that has significantly improved user experience, generated enthusiastic feedback, and streamlined cloud costs and IT operations.

Transforming MSC’s security strategy from a fragmented setup to a unified, centralized model aligns with its broader goal of creating a single control point for all applications and services—fully compliant with global regulations. Citrix has played a key role in this evolution, providing both robust IT management tools and a unified platform for delivering services to internal and external users.

"Citrix helps us gather all the relevant information from our various applications, enabling us to correlate incidents and ensure we have everything needed to analyze and identify any issues within our environment,” says Bruno Sicchieri, Chief Information Security Officer, MSC.

As it becomes increasingly more common for employees to use multiple devices for work, each endpoint is seen as a potential security risk. Citrix’s solutions enable MSC to tightly manage these endpoints, safeguarding and prioritizing security. This marks a natural progression in the company’s approach, shaped by evolving user needs and a dynamic threat landscape. “With Citrix, we can keep all endpoints to our IT services under control,” says Sicchieri.

The global shipping leader has implemented a powerful use case for Citrix Secure Private Access™, transforming how its fleet position application is delivered across the organization. Initially published through traditional desktop methods to maintain zero-trust principles, the company had to adapt, as captains needed mobile access to be able to better prepare terminal operations. Secure Private Access now enables access to critical information directly on mobile devices without compromising security requirements – supporting smooth and efficient port operations.

Transforming availability and security through the cloud

The transition from on-premises Citrix infrastructure to Citrix Cloud has been transformative for the shipping company. It has enabled multiple entry points and connection types, all while significantly enhancing system availability—critical for MSC’s business applications. “Citrix plays a very fundamental role,” says Sicchieri. “At the end of the day, it is the single point of entry for all our IT teams and all our customers.”

Additionally, the Citrix platform licensing model has provided substantial advantages in cost optimization and support, allowing unlimited resource utilization across the entire Citrix portfolio and facilitating strategic consolidation with a key technology partner. Citrix is now a cornerstone piece of the global shipping leader’s IT strategy. “As of today, all of the 3,000 non-customer-facing applications are exclusively consumed through Citrix technology,” says Drion. “This allows our users to have the same experience across the world while ensuring a high standard of security with a complete zero-trust approach.” It also helps MSC streamline end-user device management, standardizing it across all entities. This ensures a consistent user experience worldwide while maintaining a rigorous zero-trust security approach.

Optimizing advantages in a dynamic landscape

Looking forward, MSC is exploring how NetScaler® can enhance load balancing and application security in its environment while continuing to optimize costs through the Citrix platform license. This advancement will improve automation and centralize the management of its deployments. At the same time, it is investigating how AI can deliver concrete advantages in its rapidly evolving business landscape and is confident that access to features like Enterprise Browser, Adaptive Authentication, and uberAgent—included in its Citrix platform license—will be instrumental in achieving these ambitious goals.
