There are few universal truths that apply to the majority of workplaces around the world. There is one, though, that crosses industry groups, diverse businesses, and large and small organizations alike — people are the most valuable asset in any organization. And if we are the most valuable asset, providing us with a great employee experience (EX) is like giving the company a magic bullet. A great employee experience cures what ails those among us who are disengaged. It goes a long way toward driving exceptional business outcomes.

CEOs and execs struggle with retaining high-performing employees and acquiring top talent. They’ve realized that the tools and technology they provide us are a large contributing factor to creating a great employee experience. Equally important, if a great EX can turn the daily work grind into a less frustrating, more efficient workflow, we become more engaged and productive.

Executives must deal with the fact that our expectations have changed, too. Workers expect a consumer-like experience from the technology used at work. We want what’s important to be front and center — in the form of a feed or a one-click action. We don’t want to have to fully open an app to accomplish a simple task such as an approval. We want things like setting up a request for time off or triggering a purchase order to be simple and painless and accomplished in seconds.

While most organizations have done a lot to improve the customer experience (CX) and customer-facing apps, it seems that our employee-facing applications and technology have been the last to be addressed. They are old and hard to use. This contributes to our dissatisfaction and greatly detracts from retention.

The polling organization Gallup provides startling statistics to highlight the retention dilemma, even going so far as to call the largest single generational segment in the workforce today the job-hopping generation. They call millennials:

  • The most likely generation to switch jobs
  • The least engaged generation in the workplace
  • The biggest segment of job changers, with 21 percent of millennials saying they’ve changed jobs within the past year
  • The group that changes jobs at a pace that is more than three times that of non-millennials who report the same kind of information

The companies that are having the best results dealing with these issues are digitally-forward businesses. They invest in modern digital workspaces that can spell the difference between employee retention and corresponding business success versus failure. The digital workspace solutions that organize, guide, and automate work enable us to have the kinds of interactions that reduce the daily grind and make work efficient. They significantly contribute to a great employee experience.
