We know a great employee experience is important to our customers, and we are constantly looking for ways to support that as we work to improve Citrix Workspace Environment Management (WEM). One way we’re doing this is through a new feature — External Tasks for WEM — that enable IT admins to execute tasks seamlessly after a user logs off or when they reconnect to their user session.

Let’s look at how WEM supports external tasks when users log off or reconnect to their sessions.

The External Tasks feature enables IT admins to control the execution of External Tasks such as running .vbs or .cmd scripts. To support logoff tasks like cleanup etc, we enhanced this feature so it can be triggered when a user reconnects or after logoff. These admin-created custom scripts support a variety of configurations, giving IT admins the flexibility to choose what’s best for their environment.

The diagram below shows an external task occurring after the assigned user group sessions are completely logged off; users no longer need to wait for their session to end to leave their workspace. Admins also can execute External Tasks upon reconnection to the session, making it a seamless experience for the employee.

Admins get visibility into external task execution. Once the feature is enabled, a log file named “Citrix WEM Agent Logoff.log” is created the first time a user logs off. The log file helps admins monitor and troubleshoot issues related to External Tasks created for each user on the given workstation and is stored in the user’s profile.

This feature is most helpful when implementing configuration changes. A great example is when admins are working with file type association (FTA) management. Dynamic app assignment requires that FTA runs on the user environment to ensure the correct file types execute with the correct application, such as HTML files to the correct browser. Once the user logs off, FTA can execute without the user having to wait for this task to complete.
