Some functionality in device admin is disappearing. Here’s how Citrix Endpoint Management can help.

Citrix Endpoint Management supports new deployment methods

This is the first installment in a series of blog posts intended to provide information about what is changing for Android Enterprise and how you, as an administrator of Citrix Endpoint Management (formerly XenMobile), may be affected.

Google announced device admin deprecation with its 2019 Android release. Device management using device admin is now considered a legacy management approach for Android devices. With the increased needs of Android devices in the enterprise world and their growing use cases, Android introduced modern management modes – work profile, fully managed and dedicated device (formerly known as Corporate Owned Single Use or COSU) — in Android 5.0.

Citrix Endpoint Management supports key Android Enterprise knowledge worker management modes, like fully managed device and work profile, to help customers migrate from their legacy device admin deployments to modern management on Android. Citrix Endpoint Management also released support for dedicated device mode for line of business deployments earlier this year with its XenMobile 10.8 release.

So, what is getting deprecated and what are my options in managing Android devices in my organization?

First, Google is deprecating a certain set of device admin APIs that are listed here. Therefore, we strongly recommend that enterprise organizations start using either fully managed device mode for corporate-owned devices and work profile mode for BYO devices. Device admin for enterprise functionality will begin to be phased out starting in the Android 2018 release and will be removed in the 2019 release.

Second, if you are planning to add new Android devices under management, we suggest using fully managed device or work profile modes instead of using device admin. Also, start planning to migrate devices under device admin into newer management modes, either in batches or all at once.

Please stay tuned for the second blog post in this series on Citrix Endpoint Management and Android Enterprise, where I will provide more information on fully managed device, work profile and dedicated device modes.
