It doesn’t matter how you deliver your Citrix Workspace, whether on-premises or in the cloud. If you have a distributed organization where you need to deliver apps to all your locations securely, you need an SD-WAN solution. Citrix SD-WAN is engineered to give your Citrix Workspace users a great experience in any branch location.

Citrix SD-WAN: the SD-WAN of choice for your digital workspace

Without traffic prioritization, critical virtual app and desktop traffic may not have enough bandwidth. Citrix SD-WAN ensures fair sharing of bandwidth among users. This ensures that the activities of one user — streaming video or large file transfers or print jobs — don’t impact the user experiences of others on the same network link. In addition, you can prioritize different streams of HDX traffic, so that print jobs and file transfers don’t get prioritized over keyboard and mouse/touch input and display remoting. The unique thing is that you can do this with a single-port configuration for more granular control, more security and easier set-up.

High resolution monitors, rich media and file syncing all drive up demand for network bandwidth — bandwidth that can eat into budget you don’t have. Adding MPLS is expensive and slow to install or expand as you add branches to your network.

Of course, if you’re moving to Citrix Cloud and you want to connect to your VDAs in the cloud, you can get reliable connections from your branch offices directly to Citrix Cloud. You can also avoid those extra hops to the datacenter that increase latency. When running your VDAs in the cloud, you can aggregate your bandwidth using low-cost options like broadband and deliver reliable connections for HDX traffic and real-time audio-video, and give your users a great experience.

Case in point: Rehab Management

Rehab Management lacked sufficient bandwidth for delivering virtual app and desktop traffic and video. With office locations connected via an MPLS-based WAN, Rehab Management, an Australia-based healthcare provider offering rehabilitation management services, lacked bandwidth. This caused concerns about user productivity, security and cost. Its infrastructure is critical to ensuring people who live outside populated city areas have access to the treatment they require to recover and get back to work.

The Citrix virtual WAN solution proved integral to its ability to eliminate branch-office complexities. It allowed Rehab Management to replace MPLS connections with only existing Internet (ADSL) access, giving the company 10x the bandwidth by aggregation. By using Citrix SD-WAN alongside Citrix Virtual Apps, the healthcare provider is able to deliver remotely published applications from its Sydney office to employees working in remote locations throughout Australia. This improves the quality of services provided to patients and increases mobility among its workforce.

The additional enhancements in the latest release of the Citrix SD-WAN platform are compelling, and the zero-touch service with the new lower-cost appliance allows us to expand quickly as we add additional locations within our network. Tackling the connectivity issue at its core also means no office is at a disadvantage, with cost-effective tools that complement our existing IT infrastructure empowering employees to do their job remotely. — Boris Kotevski, National IT Manager, Rehab Management

Case in point: LeasePlan

LeasePlan lacked bandwidth for video, Skype, and other rich content and needed to reduce latency caused by backhauling internet traffic. As a world leader in fleet management and driver mobility, LeasePlan employees span 110 branch offices across 32 countries. LeasePlan uses Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops to deliver virtual desktops and hundreds of applications to its branch locations, which rely on a network powered by Citrix.

With Citrix SD-WAN, the company is now able to reduce its reliance on MPLS and use commodity DSL internet circuits and even 4G to increase bandwidth giving its users a better experience while lowering the WAN infrastructure costs. The company’s plans also included moving to a cloud-based workspace environment and it needed the infrastructure in place to do that successfully. With Citrix SD-WAN, LeasePlan can enable its branches to securely break out locally to the internet to access cloud applications. LeasePlan uses a local connection and connects directly to the datacenter for hosted applications.

As we move toward a cloud-based workspace environment, and as we pivot our branches from pointing to the datacenter to pointing to cloud, we’ll need our infrastructure to travel with us. — Ronan MurrayGlobal IT Operations Manager
