At Citrix, we are always working to make our users’ lives easier. They’re at the center of everything we do, from helping them save time to adding workflow flexibility. I’ve seen firsthand how Citrix Workspace Environment Management (WEM) service can help to improve user experience, which is why I created a series of videos highlighting how to get started with WEM service.
WEM service simplifies workspace management and adds value to your Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops deployments. It provides resource management functionality, logon improvement tools, and a centralized management experience. Let’s look at how to configure WEM service and, more importantly, how WEM service can optimize user experience.
WEM Service Configuration
The journey to streamlining your environment starts with a single step, or in this case, with setting up the WEM service. As a Citrix Cloud offering, the service eliminates the need to install and maintain the WEM infrastructure that was necessary with the on-prem version. Learn how to configure WEM service quickly in the video below!
System Optimization
After configuring the WEM agent, it’s important to make use of the System Optimization features. CPU and RAM bottlenecks occur when servers are overused or aren’t optimized (or both). The System Optimization features relieve the burden on your servers by analyzing user and application behavior in real time. WEM service then intelligently adjusts RAM, CPU, and I/O in your environment, creating a better user experience. These settings are adjusted to free up resources for other apps, which leads to improved server scalability and reduced infrastructure costs.
The video below gives you an in-depth look at how to configure some key System Optimization features, including CPU Spike Protection, Memory Management, and Fast Logoff.
Logon Optimization
A major benefit of WEM service is that it drastically improves logon times. Long logon times are often at the core of many employee complaints and can hinder overall experience. Similarly, for admins, long logon times can flood the support desk with calls. WEM service can help to combat this inefficient cycle. The service allows you to improve logon times through action configurations and profile management.
Action configurations include managing applications, printers, network drives, registry keys, and external tasks. These configurations are often applied to user profiles as Group Policy Objects (GPOs) and Group Policy Preferences (GPPs) during the logon process. Actions are applied by the WEM agent and act as a replacement for those GPOs and GPPs, which results in faster logon speeds.
Admins can manage user profile settings with WEM service. Like actions, security settings can be applied by the WEM agent, resulting in improved logon times compared to a GPO deployment. WEM also supports Citrix Profile Management where you can enable profile streaming. Once enabled, only a portion of the profile is loaded at logon, and the remaining files and folders are retrieved upon user access.
Learn how to optimize the logon experience with action configuration and profile management in the video below.
