Over the last several months, we’ve seen countless examples of heroism. Hospital workers who’ve left their families to serve the critically ill and save lives. Young people who’ve creatively thought outside the box to stand up grocery-delivery services for those who could not go shopping themselves. People whose hair-brained ideas (such as matching human haircuts to the closest pictures of look-alike horse manes) raised funds for horse charities.

In the technology world, IT teams have earned their stripes in another way: keeping things as normal as possible on the work front in these anything-but-normal times. They’ve taken time away from their families to overcome the business disruptions and frustrations caused by COVID-19 and to keep things running.

We’ve seen technologists and their teams stand up remote environments in record time so knowledge workers could stay productive while working at home. So students could maintain their educational momentum, despite schools and universities being closed for in-person instruction. And so governmental entities, with offices mostly empty, could still provide essential services for their communities.

And their efforts continue. As the pandemic persists, business leaders are formulating and implementing strategies to keep their organizations afloat and moving toward the next normal.

We just did a survey of IT executives in seven countries and 75 percent said COVID-19 will change the way employees feel about remote work. In their view, employees won’t want to go back to the office full time because they can work just as reliably and productively from home. Enabling such flexible models will require even technical savvy, planning, and best practices to ensure the employee experience stays strong, security remains stringent, and businesses emerge agile enough to capitalize on crucial opportunities.

If you’re an IT leader, chances are your plate already is full. In fact, you’re probably in plate spinning mode, hoping that nothing comes crashing to the floor. At times like these, it pays to phone a friend — or dial up a group of friends
