You remember the line, “Toto, we’re not in Kansas anymore!” In the Wizard of Oz, Dorothy made this exclamation after a tornado lifted her house, swirled it around, and dropped it down on a witch in Munchkinland. It was a whole new world, and Dorothy didn’t recognize anything in it.

The Land of Employee Experience doesn’t look like it once did, either.

In the past, this was HR’s turf. What’s more, HR was responsible for determining (if and how much) a great employee experience netted ROI for the business.

Now, CIOs and IT leaders have entered the fray. Their offices have been dropped down into the Land of Employee Experience, too.

Technology leaders now are charged with finding the right digital workplace technology solutions that can deliver the kind of employee experience that top talent demands. A great employee experience improves engagement and productivity. Ultimately, it can positively impact the organization’s bottom line. It’s the role of IT leaders to put together the strategy that makes this happen.

Surveys prove that the employee experience is becoming top of mind and critically important. In The Experience of Work: The Role of Technology in Productivity and Engagement, a research report by the Economist Intelligence Unit, Arthur Mazur, Partner, HR Strategy, Deloitte, summarizes it well:

A positive employee experience requires removing friction from work and digital technology has a big part to play in that.

The report continues to say that most executives surveyed agree (46 percent of high performers and 41 percent of digitally more mature organizations) that the applications and devices that their organizations provide make a positive contribution to employees’ working experience.

What’s more, The Economist Intelligence Unit found that four in ten respondents (41 percent) strongly agree (and another 44 percent somewhat agree) that the purpose of workplace systems needs to change from controlling to empowering employees.
