The XenApp and XenDesktop Service trial on Citrix Cloud will help demonstrate the value of the cloud-based platform. Cloud-based means centralized service management and simplified design and deployment of virtual apps and desktops – no matter where they’re deployed. Use this guide to prepare for your XenApp and XenDesktop Service trial.
Please note: To ensure a successful and a great customer experience, Citrix reserves the right to limit trials to a number of participants at one time. Please use the time you have until your trial is approved to prepare.
When you request the XenApp and XenDesktop Service trial, you’ll see the button status change to “Trial Requested” on the Citrix Cloud services page. You can see all trials you have requested and their status on the same page.
When your XenApp and XenDesktop Service trial is ready, you’ll be notified by email and the button will change from “Trial Requested” to “Manage”. Before you receive that email, it’s a good idea to start preparing for your trial.
We recommend you make five key decisions before starting your XenApp and XenDesktop Service trial.

NetScaler VPX Express is a virtual appliance limited to 1 Mbps of throughput that is available for a free 90-day trial.

Will your trial require remote access? If so, Citrix NetScaler Gateway is needed for each resource location accessed remotely.
Determine which applications will be included in the trial. For optimal performance, supporting data and application servers should be located in close proximity to the VDAs
|5||Virtual Applications and Desktops
How many server and desktop VDAs are required for the trial. What operating systems will be used? How will they be created – using Machine Creation Services or a regular install?
The diagram below shows how an on-premises environment would be set up for Citrix Cloud. For the trial, you would just need to build and manage the resource location.
At a high-level, the Citrix Cloud consists of six layers.
Supports each resource location whether hosted on-premises or in the cloud
Two physical hosts with a minimum of 16 physical cores, 64GB RAM, 500GB HDD, and Citrix XenServer, Microsoft Hyper-V or VMware vSphere installed. You should also have an AWS or Azure account set up.
Skip this step if you’re deploying to cloud.
If using Hyper-V, the physical host should be managed using SCVMM. If using vSphere, the physical host should be managed using vCenter. Citrix XenServer does not require a separate management server.
Includes components that support the resource location, including the Citrix Cloud Connectors and Microsoft Active Directory domain controllers.
Ensure that the following supporting infrastructure is in your resource location:
If necessary, create a virtual machine (recommended name DC-01) with Microsoft Server 2012 R2 or Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 (2 vCPU, 4GB RAM, 60GB HDD) to host these roles.
Create a virtual machine (recommended name CC-01) with Microsoft Server 2012 R2 or Microsoft Server 2008 R2 (2vCPU, 4GB RAM, 40GB HDD). This machine will be used for the Citrix Cloud Connector.
|Add the connector server to the Microsoft Active Directory forest containing the user accounts that will be used for the trial.|
|If using a VMware vCenter self-signed certificate, the certificate needs to be added to the Citrix Cloud Connector. For more information, please refer to VMware and Virtual Machine Management.|
|If using a Hyper-V and System Center Virtual Machine Manager (SCVMM), the SCVMM Console must be installed on the Citrix Cloud Connector.|
|The Citrix Cloud Connector requires outbound port 443 to be open with access to the Internet. The Citrix Cloud Connector supports connection to the Internet via a web proxy server. However, that web proxy must work with SSL/TLS encrypted communication. Both the installer and the service itself need connections to Citrix Cloud. For more information, please refer to the “Configuring for a Web Proxy” section of Citrix Cloud Connector Technical Details.|
Focuses on personalization, applications, storage, and image design. The workspace layer is where subscribers interact with desktops and applications and is most visible to the subscribers.
Create a virtual machine (recommended name XA-00) with Microsoft Server 2012 R2 or Windows Server 2008 R2 (4vCPU, 8GB RAM, 60GB HDD). This machine will be used as the master image for server OS based VMs.
Note: Do not add the virtual machine to the domain. Citrix Machine Creation Services will 3.1 perform this step automatically
|On XA-00, install the applications that subscribers will need during the trial.|
Create a virtual machine (recommended name XD-00) with Microsoft Windows 7.x, Windows 8.x or Windows 10 (2 vCPU, 4GB RAM and 40GB HDD). This machine will be used as the master image for desktop based OS VMs.
Note: Do not add the virtual machine to the domain. Citrix Machine Creation Services will perform this step automatically.
|On XD-00, install the applications that subscribers will need during the trial.|
|3.3||Download the Citrix Virtual Delivery Agent (VDA) standalone package (version 7.0 is the minimum supported, version 7.6 or newer is recommended) to the resource location where it is easily accessible. A file share on the domain controller is a good option.|
Focuses on the method and process subscribers follow in order to establish and maintain a connection to their resources.
Download and import the NetScaler VPX appliance (recommended name NS-01) that will be used to provide subscribers with remote access (2vCPU, 4GB, 20GB). An SDX or MPX can also be used, if available.
The NetScaler Gateway should be located in the DMZ. Configure the NetScaler Gateway with two IP addresses –
Reserve an external IP address for the VIP. The IP address will be used by subscribers to access their resources.

Download and install a license on the NetScaler Gateway. For more information, please refer to How to License NetScaler Appliances Using Manage Licenses Tool.
Note: NetScaler VPX Express is a virtual appliance limited to 5 Mbps of throughput that is available for a free 90-day trial. This should be sufficient to test between 15 and 20 concurrent remote users, depending on their workload. For more information on NetScaler VPX Express, please refer to the NetScaler VPX FAQ.
||Obtain and install SSL certificate for the Gateway Virtual Server. For more information, please refer to How to Generate and Install a Public SSL Certificate on a NetScaler Appliance.|
|4.5||Create a public facing DNS record with the same name as the certificate installed on the Gateway Virtual Server. Use the external IP (VIP) assigned to the Gateway Virtual Server.|

Uses Cloud Connectors to orchestrate and aggregate services within each resource location. The control plane communicates with multiple resource locations providing a single pane of management.
