PPS modernizes its network across South Africa to power a better employee experience

As a mutual financial services company that’s owned by its members, PPS knows a thing or two about taking care of its own. So, when the IT team learned its employees across its 25 offices in South Africa and Namibia were working overtime because of a slow network, they decided to take action. PPS turned to Citrix SD-WAN and a multi-cloud strategy to modernize an outdated MPLS-based network and transform the employee experience.

Better network visibility makes it easier to spot and fix issues

Derik Scheepers, head of IT operations at PPS, said MPLS was “slow and cumbersome. We didn’t have any agility.” Plus, he said the IT team didn’t have the right tools to identify issues and investigate what was happening on the network. “With SD-WAN and with the Citrix intelligence that’s built into the application and into the devices, it’s easy to find the problems, rectify those problems in a proactive manner, and keep the office running.”

Embracing the cloud for IT agility and the best user experience

As part of its cloud strategy, PPS is migrating applications to the cloud for faster provisioning and better connectivity. PPS currently hosts Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops in Google Cloud and has plans to leverage Amazon and AWS in the near future.

“Each cloud offers different things for us,” Scheepers says. “We want to have the agility to move around to get the best performance for our members. We have no more downtime, no more struggling to log in, no more struggling just to open apps and then connect to do their daily tasks. The user experience just multiplied.”

Changing the way people work

A reliable network not only has enabled employees to access what they need quickly and reliably from any location. “They actually got some time back, so they can spend quality time at home, rather than at the office doing the overtime,” Scheepers says.

Things have improved for the IT team, as well. “They don’t have to work late nights as they used to do,” Scheepers says. “They have more time to be innovative themselves, to think of new things that they need to do apart from just putting out fires all the time.”
