What is an e-signature?

An average workday in many businesses is filled with paperwork -- contracts and documents that need to be filled out, signed, and returned. An e-signature, or electronic signature, is a term for any document that is executed and signed electronically, without the use of paper. In common practice, such documents are often signed in a method directly analogous to a paper document: by applying the signer’s name, either typed or hand-drawn using a mouse or touch screen.

Businesses and professionals often use e-signatures to save time and reduce costs, with electronic documents transmitting to clients much faster than postal mail. Additionally, ease of use is also a concern, with many customers dissatisfied with the difficulty of faxing, scanning, and returning a signed contract in an age when these tools are no longer widely used.
