Major League Baseball® Giving employees freedom to focus on the game

Whether home or away, a lot goes into the operations, broadcasting, partnerships, analytics, and security of a Major League Baseball game. In order to keep shaping the future of baseball, MLB® uses Citrix digital workspace solutions. By combining the Citrix Workspace Premium Plus bundle (now Citrix DaaS Premium Plus), Citrix ADC, and Citrix Consulting and Support Services, MLB employees get secure, unified access to everything they need to get work done from anywhere—at home, from a ballpark, in the office, or on the road.

MLB teams play a whopping 162 games in a typical season. (To compare, NBA and NHL teams play about half that, and NFL teams play a mere 17.) Have you ever wondered why? One of the reasons is because of the importance of stats in MLB: More games means more data. And more data lead to better statistics.

“I love baseball and to me it really comes down to a battle between the pitcher and the batter. To me, that is a great drama. And then you have the stats; to be able to have all the real-time stats right in front of you is great. That really adds a lot to that classic showdown,” explains Noah Garden, Chief Revenue Officer, MLB. “And the technology, it just keeps getting better and better.”

But somehow, every pitch-by-pitch and play-by-play has to get recorded. That’s where Stringers and BOSS operators come in. They’re at every game, capturing and delivering that data to a host of platforms and partners, including consumer apps, websites, broadcasts, ballpark scoreboards, and sports betting platforms. With Citrix Workspace and VDI technology, the Stringers and BOSS operators have a “one-stop shop” for everything they need; they can focus on the game, without having to worry about interface reliability, stability, or security.

“Much like players on the field, our internal teams need agility and innovative tools that allow them to quickly and easily access the resources they need to perform at their best,” said Chris Marinak, MLB Chief Operations and Strategy Officer. “Using Citrix, we can enable our employees to maximize productivity and performance from wherever they are.”

IT benefits too, gaining the freedom to adapt with ease and more time to focus on high-value initiatives. The Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops service ensures secure access to a hybrid deployment; this means less time and energy wasted on managing servers, patching environments, and monitoring hardware. And by incorporating desktop as a service (DaaS) resources into the deployment, IT gains the agility to quickly roll out cloud capacity any time the need arises—without having to invest in additional infrastructure. The addition of Citrix ADC enables IT to move to virtual-based appliances. This allows them to not only replace F5 appliances, but also consolidate their physical datacenter presence.

Citrix ADC is the most comprehensive application delivery and load balancing solution for monolithic and microservices-based applications on the market today, which is crucial in order for MLB’s IT team to deliver the best experience on any device—anywhere. But they don’t have to go it alone. MLB also uses Citrix Consulting and Support Services, which helped design and deploy the entire Citrix environment. And with priority support for both Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (a component of Citrix Workspace) and Networking, Citrix continuously monitors the MLB environment and proactively approaches any support issues.

In one support case, Citrix Support and the Technical Account Manager (TAM) assisted with a configuration change to the cloud environment that simplified their Stringers (end user) experience when trying to log into Citrix Cloud and connect to their VDI utilizing HTML Citrix Workspace App. With the change the Stringers were able to connect successfully to their VDI without installing any additional software

MLB is evolving the spectator sport of baseball in an increasingly mobile and remote world. And Citrix is proud to be an Innovation Partner of this prestigious league, with Citrix digital workspace solutions taking center stage so employees can be more connected, more engaged, and more influential in shaping the future of MLB.
