The latest updates to Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops extend our leadership in App and Desktop Virtualization by reducing bandwidth consumption, improving the user experience, and extending administrative flexibility and choice. Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops 7 1903 delivers numerous industry-first user experience innovations. This new update enhances the tablet experience for devices a leveraging pen/stylus, faster provisioning and further improvements for Linux app and desktop delivery. You can now leverage NVENC hardware encoding and H.265 video codec with Server-based published applications and desktops, delivering better image quality, reduced latency, and better overall graphics performance.
Citrix has been consistently testing Windows Server 2019 throughout our development cycle, and our 1808 and newer releases are designed to position Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops with support for the newly-released Windows Server 2019 platform.
Starting in late 2018, Citrix is moving to a new versioning scheme to make it easier for customers determine when the version was released. The “7” ensures platform versioning consistency, indicating that this is the same industry-leading platform for app and desktop virtualization as the previous XenApp and XenDesktop 7.x releases. The “1811” represents the actual version. This new numbering strategy is very similar in nature to Microsoft’s versioning strategy - the last four numbers make it easier for you to quickly determine when the version was released as it is represented by year and month (YYMM format).
We are also unifying product editions across our portfolio – designating them Standard, Advanced, and Premium.

Our 1808 and newer releases fully support Windows Server 2019, empowering customers to move as aggressively or as conservatively as their business dictates. Customers can embrace this next generation of Windows Server with a smooth transition that meets any timeline.
Citrix is the first in the industry to deliver a solution for optimizing web-based Microsoft Teams in a virtual environment. We want to ensure the best possible user experience of a virtualized instance of web-based Teams. To do so, Citrix leverages Browser Content Redirection (BCR) on the VDA and a new browser embedded within Citrix Workspace app on the endpoint. By redirecting web-based Microsoft Teams rendering to the browser within Workspace app, Citrix is able to optimize the Teams user experience by offloading processing and rendering to the endpoint device. In addition, server scalability is increased as the web-based Teams instances consume less CPU on the VDAs. This new capability not only optimizes Microsoft Teams, but also optimizes any WebRTC applications, such as Google Hangouts. Customers standardized on our 7.15 LTSR release can now download a VDA update to provide this functionality to users.
Release after release, we expand our capabilities based on feedback from our customers. In addition to optimized web-based Teams and NVENC support with Virtual Apps, we’ve delivered the ability to redirect encrypted mass storage USB devices within Server VDAs, support file transfers larger than 4GBs with client drive mapping, and have reintroduced Local Text Echo for users with extreme network latency. We also make continuous improvements to our ICA protocol. Organizations replacing multiple physical monitors with single high-resolution displays will also benefit from our Virtual Display Layout, which simulates multiple monitors inside a session, as well as Windows 10 DPI matching. With this release, we also delivered performance enhancements that resulted in up to a 4x improvement in throughput consumption for all virtual channels over TCP on fast WAN connections, improving user experience on unrestricted connections. Client Drive Mapping also realized a 2x improvement in file transfer with over the WAN (50ms and 150ms latencies tested), decreasing file transfer time for both ICA over TCP and ICA over EDT. These improvements are just a stepping-stone for the next generation of HDX technologies.
