Dampskibsselskabet NORDEN A/S

Dampskibsselskabet NORDEN A/S is a consolidated and independent Danish shipping company listed on the Copenhagen NASDAQ OMX stock exchange. The company was founded in 1871 and is one of the world's largest dry bulk shipping companies. The company has nearly 350 employees, respectively. The head office is in Copenhagen and it has offices in Singapore, Shanghai, Annapolis, Rio de Janeiro and Mumbai. In addition, it employs about 800 employees at the company's ships. NORDEN provides a daily operation of 250 to 300 dry cargo and tankers and is characterized by stability, competence and growth.

The challenge: To facilitate the work of employees in Singapore

Sture Freudenreich, Director - Head of IT NORDEN has been responsible for the complex corporate IT use since 2000.

"Around 2003, we needed to make work easier for the employees in our Singapore office, which was then the only so-called udekontor. When they had to work on our shipping system, they did it through dial-in, and then logged onto our former AS / 400 solution. It was too difficult and time consuming for them, so we had to find an easier solution. Here, Citrix is the obvious choice in terms of Citrix MetaFrame, which today is Citrix XenApp,” says Sture Freudenreich.

The solution: Secure remote access to a business-critical system

"We had various IT consulting firms out to present solutions, but we chose Citrix’s partner Lean-On because their Citrix knowledge was second to none. Since then we have worked with them for both major updates and in terms of the ongoing operating aid to our environment. We got a solution that gave all relevant employees in Singapore and people with home offices access to our business-critical shipping system via a published desktop. This was made possible by using Citrix XenApp and Citrix Branch Repeater, which today is called CloudBridge, which optimizes traffic that goes over the WAN.”

Growth in line with DS Norden business

When Sture Freudenreich joined NORDEN in 2000, there were 30 employees and a handful of ships. NORDEN has since expanded massively.” We established the Citrix solution to facilitate the work in the Singapore office. But as the company's expansion, we have been able to spread the Citrix solution to new locations and have a good solution for remote access ready when we opened overseas offices in Annapolis, Shanghai, Rio de Janeiro and Mumbai."

In addition, offices in shipyards during periods when NORDEN will have built new ships, as well as users in the form of "port captains" who travels around the world and assures the quality of loading and unloading on selected ships.

"Citrix is a really good solution for optimizing the flow of data between clients and servers. It is good for our very geographically dispersed and very different users. It is important that we, via Citrix XenApp and Branch Repeater, can provide users with the overseas offices a good experience,” says Sture Freudenreich.

Other parts of NORDEN changed the way it uses IT: From the AS / 400 solution, the company has gone for a modern, integrated Windows solution where shipping system IMOS since 2012 has been the main nerve. And in 2012 it installed a major upgrade where they went over to Citrix XenApp 6.5 and went from thick to thin clients.

Benefits: A cost-effective, secure and centralized solution

"With Citrix XenApp and Branch Repeater, which today is called CloudBridge, we got a solution that gave employees in our geographically dispersed organization secure remote access to business-critical systems and a good user experience. And with Citrix XenApp 6.5, we have achieved additional benefits, namely that all users use the same version of IMOS, and that we avoid spending time and money on maintenance of our +250 desktops.”

The future: Considering new Citrix solution

In addition, using DS Norden Citrix NetScaler - currently only for load balancing.

"But we are considering extending the application to be another layer of security against our various types of devices. We take this position at the next review of our Citrix infrastructure - reassess where we are considering implementing Citrix XenDesktop. Here with we would be able to supplement our highly secure solution with increased flexibility for users,” says Sture Freudenreich.
