Established in 1946, Confartigianato Vicenza represents over 21,000 companies and entrepreneurs. With its 30 branches, distributed in the province of Vicenza, and 500 employees, it is the largest trade association in Italy.
Confartigianato Vicenza aims to protect and promote companies in a changing market, thanks to a system of integrated services and customized organizational processes.
Innovation, a key element of the activities of Confartigianato Vicenza, is a widespread culture system in businesses with a strong link to information technology and opportunities related to it.
The need to manage large amounts of data and services led Confartigianato Vicenza to develop, over the years, a highly complex IT infrastructure distributed throughout the territory. Confartigianato Vicenza in 2001 took the first important step towards the rationalization of its technological resources, centralizing data and simplifying the IT model for services, using Citrix technology and Terminal Server. In late 2007, it installed vSphere hypervisor, the second major step towards virtualization and data center consolidation. In 2009 it started the infrastructure change to converge virtual desktop environments using the Citrix XenDesktop 5.6 technology, a desktop virtualization solution that provides Windows desktop as an on-demand service to any user, anywhere, with simple and scalable comparisons.
A high number of employees located in the regional offices and counter services in 30 locations in the province of Vicenza, and the need to manage large amounts of data, led Confartigianato Vicenza to rationalize all the technology infrastructure by centralizing data in the home province of Vicenza, to take advantage of the opportunity to provide counter services with centralized data.
"In 2001 we implemented a Citrix solution to enable us to represent all applications within our doors, applications that go in the direction of our services in the field of accounting, payrolls, and generally oriented world craftsman. Working to deadlines we have to give answers in certain times, optimizing all phases of solution development, we must be able to deliver any type of application in a very short time," said Roberto Bertoldi, System Administrator of Confartigianato Vicenza. This need gave birth in 2001 to a Citrix environment infrastructure which was implemented by centralizing all data in the provincial and delivering them to the individual applications on each door, based on the needs of each user.
"From 2001 to 2007 we have been responsible for hardware consolidation, over the years we have gone from PC to thin client, while also consolidating the server area to desktop virtualization to take advantage of all the features of the back office of Windows 7, Office 2010 and Office 365," continued Bertoldi.
Among the solutions tested and verified by Confartigianato Vicenza, Citrix showed the best functional management and incredible speed of delivery.
"Citrix resolves the need to reduce time and resources used to manage applications and complex systems. With Citrix solutions we have found an efficient and scalable answer in accordance with our objectives," said Roberto Bertoldi, System Administrator of Confartigianato Vicenza.
In choosing the solution that best suits its needs, Confartigianato Vicenza was supported by Infonet Solutions, a Citrix partner, who provided technical support through the identification of the best solution, the consultancy for the implementation and maintenance and efficiency of the service.
Confartigianato Vicenza has deployed 710 licenses (50% of the territory) of XenDesktop 5.6 for desktop virtualization, management-oriented applications to Office 2010, Windows 7 and collaboration systems built on Microsoft platforms, also using Citrix XenApp 5 for the project and Terminal Server for core business applications. XenApp is an on-demand delivery of applications that enables virtualization, centralization and management in a data center of any Windows application, and the immediate delivery as a service to users, anywhere and on any device. XenApp reduces the cost of application management by up to 50%, increases the speed of IT responsiveness and improves the security of applications and data.
The desktop virtualization project was started in 2009. From 2009 to 2010 very specific hardware choices were made, including storage and infrastructure necessary to support the numbers of Confartigianato Vicenza.
XenDesktop 5.6 was installed with the balance of the farm on NetScaler appliances, the appliance application delivery Citrix Web.
Confartigianato Vicenza is one of the first associations that offers management of multimedia and video conferencing through a single virtual desktop platform, allowing the management of the whole territory.
The desktop virtualization project started in April 2011 and the process of shared resources is in continuous improvement.
There were many advantages obtained by Confartigianato Vicenza thanks to desktop virtualization with Citrix solutions and involved three types of users: information systems, door operators and end-users.
