Modernizing for momentum: how Axis Max Life is future-proofing insurance

For Chief Technology Officer Mukul Jain technology is the heartbeat of the organisation. His area of responsibility spans 30k users across 430+ branches, corporate offices, and outsourced operations — a workforce that must stay connected, compliant, and productive no matter where they work.

In the past year Axis Max Life saw an opportunity area to meet rising customer expectations by evolving their established on-premises VDI into an elevated version, and creating a more agile ecosystem necessary to deliver superior value in today’s high-stakes insurance landscape.

As the organisation embarked on that evolutionary journey, Axis Max Life had precise end-goals in mind. “We wanted to improve user experience, boost productivity, and enhance agility,” says Mukul Jain, Chief Technology Officer, Axis Max Life. “It was much more than a cost-cutting exercise.” Overall, the vision was a resilient, hybrid cloud environment that could support both day-to-day performance and long-term transformation.

Fundamentally, in an industry built on protecting people’s Bharosa (trust), Axis Max Life wanted the same assurance from its technology: a foundation it could rely on today, that would evolve with tomorrow’s needs. That’s why the organisation collaborated with Citrix — not as a vendor, but as a strategic partner giving Axis Max Life the support to reimagine what secure, scalable, and human-centered work could look like in the future.

A confident migration, made for agility

For Axis Max Life, evolving the end user infrastructure was a calculated decision built on testing, trust, and a clear vision of the future. The company began this transformation journey in mid-2024, evaluating multiple solutions before selecting Citrix DaaS for a structured proof of concept (POC). What began as a technical trial quickly evolved into a strategic alliance, supported by Umbrella Tech’s on-ground expertise and Citrix’s hallmark consultative approach.

Citrix DaaS stood out because of its advanced user experience, seamless failover, better responsiveness on thin clients, simplified operations, and scalability. Its lightweight ICA protocol proved ideal for India’s broadband-based branch network, delivering fast, responsive virtual desktops even in bandwidth-constrained environments.  Add to that, simplified disaster recovery through a single-URL hybrid setup, advanced compliance features, and a 20–25% lower total cost of ownership, and the decision became clear.

After completing a POC across three pilot branches (50 users), Axis Max Life moved decisively. The team mitigated risk by rolling out Citrix in phases — migrating one branch at a time, pre-assigning access, and keeping users’ existing desktops intact. The only change for employees was to login through Citrix Workspace with MFA. Within a couple of months, the team had rolled out Citrix DaaS nationwide to 20k users across 430 branches with a hassle-free completion before the scheduled due date was nearing. “Ultimately, the rollout completed ahead of schedule – we achieved the first‑ever zero escalation migration for Axis Max Life,” adds Mukul.

Today, Citrix powers two main user personas: Sales teams, who use shared desktops for short daily sessions, and operations teams, who rely on dedicated VDIs for full-day sessions. Every employee — whether in-branch, remote, or working in the bring your own device (BYOD) model — logs in through Citrix Workspace with multi-factor authentication (MFA), enjoying the same seamless access and security posture wherever they work. “With Citrix, we gained the flexibility to run on-premises or in the cloud — and switch seamlessly when it matters most,” says Mukul. “Our teams can log in anywhere, anytime and have the same experience, with zero delay.”

Resilience, reliability, and room to grow

By integrating Citrix, Axis Max Life strategically reinforced its digital backbone, ensuring the infrastructure is as resilient as the insurance solutions it provides.

With Citrix DaaS, every user — from branch staff to remote operations — now works through a secure, consistent environment where no data leaves the data center and MFA is enforced by default. This has dramatically improved data protection and compliance readiness — critical in India’s tightly regulated insurance landscape.

Operationally, the shift has been transformative. “The new Citrix setup is designed in such a way that if needed due to capacity or DR point of view, we can expand or spin up cloud desktops within hours, enabling employees to work seamlessly from the data center, DR site, or the cloud,”. “It gives us real-time business agility.” Planned downtime for maintenance has dropped by up to 80%, thanks to the SaaS-based model that offloads patching and upgrades to Citrix. Support tickets and efforts related to Infrastructure Upgrade issues are down, uptime has improved by reducing maintenance window and productivity has improved.

From a financial perspective, the numbers tell their own story: a 20–25% reduction in total cost of ownership compared to the legacy VDI setup. But perhaps the most telling measure is human — branch staff satisfaction is way up, with surveys showing marked improvements in responsiveness and reliability, especially for thin-client users on broadband networks.

Now, with 20,000 users fully onboarded ahead of schedule, Axis Max Life’s end-user computing infrastructure is ready for whatever comes next — including extending Citrix to call centers and browser-based work. In an industry where trust is the ultimate policy, Citrix has become Axis Max Life’s safety net by securing data and ensuring that operations never falter.
