We all know that feeling: when you wakeup and realize it’s your birthday or anniversary again, and you ask yourself, “how did that happen so fast?” Well, this year marks the fifth anniversary of AWS re:Invent and our sponsorship of the conference.  In that time it’s gone from a small show to arguably the largest cloud conference on the planet. And I’m asking myself, “where’d the time go?”

In the proverbial “blink of an eye,” cloud has gone from an experimental platform for developers to a top priority for IT. And workloads of all types are being migrated faster than ever.  The industry has shaken out and some of AWS’s most formidable competitors have now become AWS customers or MSPs. At cloud speed, 5 years is a long time and the world has changed tremendously.

At Citrix, the cloud is also accelerating of our pace of innovation. Five years ago, we were just launching support for XenApp, XenDesktop and NetScaler on AWS. Now we’re bringing our entire portfolio to Citrix Cloud, which was engineered with full support for AWS from the ground up.

re:Invent 2015 was the first event at which we shared Citrix Cloud and this year we have enhanced it with Citrix LifeCycle Management Update and SmartScale services (CLM).

screen-shot-2016-11-28-at-12-40-05-pmSmartScale, in particular, is critically important for XenApp service users on AWS because it automates the daily scaling of your AWS IaaS to match your users actual usage patterns.  This optimizes your IaaS consumption and can lower your costs by as much as 70%.

This, in turn, has led to an explosion in Citrix services consumption, as customers who previously would have had to “forklift” their XenApp and XenDesktop farms to AWS are increasingly shifting to Citrix Cloud. Much credit goes to the AWS Accelerator Program for Citrix, which provides free cloud credits and Citrix CLM automation to any project team running a qualified POC of Citrix on AWS.  Register here if you would like to apply.

And that’s just the beginning! Industry stalwarts are also seeing the trend in cloud adoption by Citrix customers and rallying to support the process and make it easier. For example, Equinix just announced a management service for Citrix NetScaler SD-WAN, which leverages their footprint as a top datacenter provider for many clouds, including AWS, and at top provider of AWS Direct Connect networks. Their new service enables turnkey, fully managed, HW based, fault tolerant network redundancy, WAN Optimization, and Enterprise Grade encryption, management and governance for AWS customers and in particular those who have reached a level of utilization that also warrants use of AWS DirectConnect for links to corporate datacenters. We’re seeing a lot of interest for those running Citrix virtual Apps and Desktops too (stay tuned for a blog post on that soon!)

Our NetScaler Application Delivery Controller (ADC) team has been hard at work too. Stop by booth #620 to see a tech preview of NetScaler AutoScaling and our new Network and Application Management and Analytics service (MAS).  We’ll be showing how NetScaler can interoperate with AWS AutoScaling, and CloudFormations, as well as passing detailed network traffic and app stack statistics to and from CloudWatch to create a true “fire and forget” solution that regulates both the network ADC and application tiers in concert.

Now, you can take control of your hybrid cloud/multi-cloud network by overlaying Enterprise Grade and application-aware security, governance, performance and resiliency, with the ease of use and administration you expect from all your AWS services.

Last, but definitely not least, we have a few seats left for the Citrix customer appreciation party after the re:Invent Welcome Reception on Tuesday evening. If you’d like to meet the Citrix and AWS executives driving all this innovation and collaboration, RSVP here. Seats are limited and it’s first come, first served, but we’ll do our best to fit you in. Hope to see you there!
