They say that simplicity is the best form of security. This is also true for demos.

The less complex the demo workflow, the fewer things to setup, the more invisible the configuration, the greater the chances of a successful demonstration (not to mention the frequency of the demo being shown). If this blog post is stirring a sense of deja vu, you probably remember our previous post, where we showed how to setup and evaluate SmartAccess and SmartControl in your environment. The reason I am revisiting the theme is that it’s now even simpler to experience those security features.

The SmartAccess and SmartControl demo is now part of the Citrix Demo Center (available within the demo focus “Application Virtualization with XenApp” ), our cloud-based environment for partners and sales engineers to demonstrate products during sales conversations. You should ask your Citrix representative to show you exactly how NetScaler enhances and secures your XenApp and XenDesktop deployment, using this demo cloud. My colleague Valerie has listed 10 good reasons for you to do so; if you haven’t done it already, check out her blog post here

In a recent blog post, our CTO, Christian Reilly, talked about how everyone is a target of hackers. He also talked about defense-in-depth being the way to make it more difficult for these hackers to infiltrate your environment. Once these intrusions occur, people with full authorizations may access enterprise data using infected systems, such as home computers that are not compliant with security policies. VDI and app virtualization can secure the data in the datacenter and place access controls at the perimeter. What you need is a way to intelligently detect not just the identity and privileges of the user, but also the security compliance of their device and security of their location, before grating access to the sensitive data. Without that, it’s like locking the door and leaving the key under the doormat.

That said, the reason many organizations choose a basic security strategy is to avoid locking the users out completely when they may be traveling or in an emergency. Remote access has become almost a necessity for many users, not a luxury. That’s where it helps that NetScaler can inspect and control individual services provided by XenDesktop and XenApp. Instead of blocking access completely if a device fails the security compliance check, SmartAccess can allow, say, email access but continue to block any file transfers, attachments, or server access.

SmartAccess in NetScaler can control granular and configurable set of policies within the HDX session, such that certain services are blocked when either the user’s machine or their location are detected to be “insecure”. Once the user is back in compliance, they automatically get access to trusted services like USB drives, clipboard, printing, file-copy, webcams, and others, without  any administrative intervention. The ability to invisibly secure the edge of the network as well as the application data, without forcing a change in user workflow or requiring helpdesk tickets is a huge saving in terms of productivity costs.

Wait no more. With the SmartAccess and SmartControl demo now available in the demo cloud, Citrix Partners and account representatives can easily demonstrate the tangible impact of context-aware security framework. The demo instance includes a step-by-step guide which shows how to deploy security policies under different scenarios, and for different types of end-points. Click here to request an instance if you’re already a partner, or contact your Citrix salesperson to see a demo, if you’re a new customer.
