Now that the Olympics in Rio have come to an end, I’m looking back and reminiscing on some of the best performances: Usain Bolt’s insane speed, Michael Phelps’ unbelievable pace and proudly, Citrix’s NetScaler SD-WAN’s steady reliability!
This year, Citrix teamed up with New Zealand pay television provider, Sky TV, to manage unpredictable network connectivity and increased bandwidth demands throughout the duration of the games.
With hundreds of thousands of tourists, athletes and media all using the same network, Sky TV knew they not only needed the best programs, but also the best contingency plan to mitigate any potential risks.
Deploying NetScaler SD-WAN in 2016 enabled Sky TV’s production teams on the ground in Rio to access critical applications, data and the tools needed to report uninterrupted during the games. Its Olympic contingency plan focused on maintaining high performances of workflow applications, while enabling it to produce quality content for its audience with the ease of knowing there is a seamless failover in the event of any disruption of network services.
Speaking about the project, Sky TV’s Director of Technology, Julian Wheeler, told me:
The Rio 2016 Olympics is a key milestone with little room for error. When testing NetScaler SD-WAN we were thrilled it delivered exactly what it promised. We’re already looking beyond the games to see how SD-WAN can support big sporting events in the future.
In speaking with Citrix ANZ’s Senior Director, Anandh Maistry, he informed me that Citrix not only provides the tools needed for a reliable backup strategy, but also provides on-going support for all customers.
“Through such support, Sky TV and other television providers can broadcast confidently knowing they not only have a solution that mitigates risks and ensures operational continuity, but also an additional security layer through our international customer support function,” Mr. Maistry said.
