Whether you’re in IT or line-of-business, you’re affected in some way by how your company delivers mobility. Hopefully, that impact is a positive one, with a mobility solution that helps you become more productive while modernizing your business. But the transformation of business through mobility can pose hurdles, such as user qualms about BYOD, the apps and experience available to users, and costly development processes.
At HPE Discover, Citrix is showcasing enterprise mobility management (EMM) solutions that help you complete each phase of your mobility journey—securing mobility, driving productivity and mobilizing the business.
HPE Managed Mobility Service (MMS) delivers a comprehensive EMM stack that consists of Citrix XenMobile, Citrix ShareFile and Citrix NetScaler to enable mobile app and device management, enterprise file sharing and unified app access available for on-premises or as an outsourced service.
Today, let’s talk about how Citrix EMM solutions help you tackle three of the most common hurdles associated with mobility: deploying and adopting BYOD; securely using Office 365 and enterprise-sanctioned storage; and making task or process workers in the field more productive with mobility.
Hurdle #1 – Offer employee-friendly BYOD
- User: I want mobile productivity, but don’t want IT to see my private information
- IT: How can I deliver true BYOD or improve the current BYOD adoption and acceptance?
I wish I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard these questions! More than 74 percent of companies surveyed by Tech Pro are already using (or plan to adopt) BYOD—but many face a problem commonly called “BYOD Backlash”: users doesn’t feel comfortable with IT managing their personally owned device. On the other hand, it’s fine with them if IT manages only business apps and data in their own secure, contained environment and leaves the rest of the device alone—including the private information it contains.
The problem: With most solutions, Mobile Application Management (MAM) is dependent on Mobile Device Management (MDM). For example, MDM serves as the mechanism to push and maintain user certificates for application-level security and application single sign-on. This means there’s no way to avoid managing the entire device, regardless of how users feel about that.
The answer: Citrix enables a MAM-only approach to EMM.
XenMobile allows you to deploy a MAM-only configuration; MDM is strictly optional. A MAM-only approach provides the same high level of app and data security as MDM, but without requiring users to enroll their device. XenMobile offers over 50 MAM-only security policies that can be applied in various combinations to the set of Citrix productivity Worx apps (Mail, Notes, Web, Tasks, Chat) or any other managed app delivered by IT within the mobile environment. It is a big win for IT, helping to foster adoption, and also a huge win for the users whose privacy is thus protected.
Only XenMobile delivers micro-VPN technology to provide each managed app with its own private, encrypted tunnel securing all the data in motion between the device and back-end resources. This differs from the commonly used per-app VPN technology from other vendors that relies heavily on the device operating system and MDM policies to deliver application level security (that’s why they’re called MDM managed apps). Instead, Citrix delivers true MAM to deploy secure mobility for your BYOD initiatives. HPE Mobility Managed Services uses Citrix technology to rapidly enable BYOD for their customers.
Hurdle #2 – Secure Office 365 and use IT-sanctioned storage
- User: Why won’t IT allow me to use Office 365 native apps on my mobile device?
- IT: How can I get EMM to manage Office 365 and avoid docs being posted to unsanctioned storage?
We get this question all the time. That’s why it was so exciting when Microsoft’s Brad Anderson announced a deeper commitment and partnership with Citrix, and specifically XenMobile, at Citrix Synergy 2016 last May. In case you missed it, here’s a link to the keynote session that describes the steps that Microsoft and Citrix will take to provide a “better together” secure experience for their EMM users (see the 30 minute mark).
XenMobile focuses on security differentiation through MDM, MAM-only policies and micro-VPNs. Intune MAM within Microsoft EMS excels in managing Office 365, which we all agree is the killer productivity app suite for any device.
The problem: No EMM vendor is allowed to wrap or containerize Microsoft Office 365 apps in order to directly manage them in the mobile environment.
The answer: XenMobile will enhance the security and user experience for Microsoft EMS and Office 365 customers.
Today, XenMobile offers a synergistic approach to Office 365 with seven key capabilities:
- Enable a single, unified app store for all types of apps, including Office mobile apps
- Enforce device passcode to enable encryption for data-at-rest
- Configure secure and encrypted network communications through NetScaler micro VPN for data-in-motion
- Open file attachments from Citrix apps directly and securely in Office 365 via a policy
- Enforce sanctioned storage for Office 365 docs—for example, in ShareFile storage zones
- Deliver unified endpoint management (UEM) so IT can manage laptops in addition to phones and tablets
- Deliver Skype for Business secure messaging to mobile devices with secure chat (currently in tech preview)
With the recent announcement during Synergy 2016, Citrix is now well-positioned to coexist with Microsoft’s Intune MAM for Office 365. Microsoft fully agrees that it needs Citrix mobility technology and partnership for enterprise-grade delivery of apps and data in the mobile environment. XenMobile will enhance the security and user experience for Microsoft EMS and Office 365 customers.
Hurdle #3 – Improve mobile productivity for task and process workers
- User: I want mobile apps to capture and submit information for my business tasks and process flows.
- IT: How can I mobilize my business without having to hire an app development team?
You’ve just spent a bunch of money on an EMM platform that delivers secure mobility for apps and data. That will address the productivity needs of the knowledge worker, but what about the large number of task and process workers in your company? Wouldn’t it be great if your EMM supported and improved business process-level productivity?
The problem: Hiring an app development team to create new apps for processes would be costly and burden you with years of managing app dev cycles.
The answer: Secure Forms.
We listened to our customers on this issue and came up with a brilliant solution. Secure Forms had its official debut last week at Citrix Synergy, when it was demonstrated during Citrix CEO Kirill Tatarinov’s keynote address.
Secure Forms enables IT and LoB to mobilize their business by easily digitizing specific processes and tasks, transforming traditional paper forms into secure mobile mini-apps without writing a single line of code. With a click, IT can publish these mini-apps for secure access by users enrolled in Citrix EMM on their mobile phone and tablets. IT is able to configure and apply the required security policies just as they would for other EMM apps. The use cases for this capability are numerous and diverse, including speeding tickets, patient request/discharge reports, aircraft service inspection, insurance claims adjuster report and so on.
