Snip the red wire or blue wire? We’ve all seen the scenes in movies where the protagonist has to think fast on his feet to figure out which wire to cut. Sever the wrong one and there are consequences. For enterprises, specifically in healthcare, the same can be said for the connections to their remote clinics across the wide area network. Should a connection go down or slow down, there’s an impact to the clinical staff’s ability to provide care which in turn impacts patient outcomes.
In a demo earlier this year at Citrix Summit, we showed exactly why it wouldn’t matter which cable was cut. With NetScaler SD-WAN (formerly CloudBridge Virtual WAN), customers can build out reliable, highly-available networks for their facilities that utilize backup links – an imperative for the healthcare industry.
Last year, The Watershed, an organization that offers drug and alcohol rehabilitation services and treatment centers, was our first North American customer to fully deploy NetScaler SD-WAN. After continued success with Citrix solutions, including NetScaler, ShareFile and XenApp/XenDesktop, the Watershed looked to Citrix again. The organization’s IT department was interested in finding a progressive way to maintain always-on connectivity during network disruptions. The goal was to keep caregivers at branch facilities focused on their patients.
The organization’s main challenge was maintaining high availability and reliability of connections to over 600 employees across facilities in Florida and Texas. The Watershed was already leasing MPLS and broadband services that operated in an active/backup manner. There were delays in failover which interrupted application sessions and impacted end-user experience. With NetScaler SD-WAN, The Watershed now runs WAN links in active/active mode, providing a multifold increase in bandwidth while link blackouts/brownouts are transparent to users. The Watershed can stay focused on its mission of saving lives by delivering high quality inpatient and outpatient drug and alcohol addiction treatment and counseling services. To date, more than 35,000 patients have been served.
Watershed (https://www.thewatershed.com) is just one example of the healthcare industry’s requirement for a highly available and reliable network and the way in which Citrix Solutions for Healthcare solves the problem and transforms care delivery.
