Addressing both privacy and security is a delicate balancing act that is becoming increasingly challenging as more users bring their own devices into the workplace. Every company must define and enforce the security and privacy policies that are right for their organization.

At Citrix, we believe XenMobile, the most complete Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) solution, gives IT organizations the flexibility and control to meet their security and governance requirements, while maintaining user privacy and delivering a better user experience.

XenMobile provides IT with the flexibility to encrypt data at the application level using Citrix MDX technology, which offers FIPS-140 validated AES-256 bit encryption. Companies are able to manage their own encryption keys. In addition, Citrix MDX provides over 60 data protection policies. With Citrix MDX, personal and company data are kept separate with our MAM-first approach.  In addition, users are not required to enroll their device.

Many EMM vendors take a different approach and simply leverage the operating system’s device-wide encryption and policies. For example, on iOS, Apple requires that a device passcode be set to enable the device’s encryption. In this instance, companies do not have the ability to manage encryption keys and users must enroll their devices.

We recognize that users are generally apprehensive that IT may be able to see their personal files, so we’ve introduced educational tools that are designed to allay users’ concerns and raise awareness for alternatives to traditional MDM. We recommend that before rolling out a BYOD program, IT organizations share this information with their users.

While it’s impossible to be completely secure and satisfy 100 percent of your users’ privacy concerns, we believe that by providing an additional level of security for company apps and data, with encryption keys that IT manage themselves, companies can get closer to achieving a better balance between security, privacy and compliance.
