Here at Citrix we strive to deliver flexible solutions that can integrate with your existing systems. It’s an idea we call “anyness,” and it has been a cornerstone of Citrix solutions for years.
ShareFile Enterprise embraces anyness by working with what you have and giving you flexible storage options. When you use ShareFile, you can choose to host your data with us in the cloud or you can keep the data inside your network using our StorageZones feature. In addition, StorageZones Connectors enable you to mobilize existing network shares, SharePoint, OneDrive for Business, ECM systems and other document libraries without worrying about content migration. ShareFile continues to strengthen in this area and remains the leading EFSS provider with the most flexible on-premises and hybrid storage options available for customers.
We recently added an additional option for customer-managed StorageZones: Third-party object storage support.
What is object storage?
Compared to legacy network storage protocols like CIFS or SMB, object storage systems allow for granular item-level control over file location and data retention.
Benefits of object storage include:
- Virtually unlimited scalability
- Policy-based data replication
- Replication and single storage namespace for high availability and disaster recovery
- Reduce cost per gigabyte by moving unused files to cold storage
Here’s an informative article about object storage if you’d like more details.
New in ShareFile: Third-party S3 support
Last year, ShareFile introduced support for sending your persistent data to a Microsoft Azure storage account as an alternative to keeping all your files on a network share. Then a similar feature for Amazon S3 accounts was added in March of this year. When using Azure or Amazon for a customer-managed StorageZone, you retain ownership of the data encryption keys, so you get the economic and elasticity benefits of the cloud with the security of an on-premises deployment.
Now, ShareFile supports any third-party object storage solution that is compatible with the Amazon S3 API. Amazon’s S3 protocol has become the de facto standard for object storage systems and is supported by most object storage solutions.
Here’s just one example of third-party S3 object storage – ShareFile is now compatible with NetApp® StorageGRID® Webscale: You can store massive amounts of data in a single, elastic content store, by using NetApp® StorageGRID® Webscale software. StorageGRID Webscale is a purpose-built, software-defined storage solution for large archives, media repositories, and web data stores. It’s designed for the hybrid cloud and supports standard protocols, including Amazon S3 and SNIA’s CDMI—so you can run your apps on premises or in the cloud. We’re excited to deliver yet another example of our commitment to anyness, and look forward to hearing your feedback on this new ShareFile capability. For technical details on how to configure StorageZones Controller to use third-party S3 object storage, head over to this article.
