Beginning in late January, Citrix Education ran a four-week Virtualization Pop Quiz; ten questions designed to see just how much you know about XenDesktop and XenApp. Over the course of four weeks, over 500 people headed over to the Citrix Education Facebook page to test their knowledge. Here’s what we found out:

  • Turns out this quiz was tough! Out of all the entries, there were only two perfect scores.
  • The average score was 5.6 out of 10.
  • We had test-takers from all over the world, with the US, India, and UK representing the highest number of Pop Quizzers.
  • Question 4 was answered correctly the most, with 89% of the test-takers getting correct.

We also discovered that Question 8 was the most difficult, with only 40% of participants answering correctly. The question was:

A business requirement mandates that employees who travel frequently must be able to access their hosted virtual desktops from remote locations.

How should an architect design remote access for users in this environment?

A.  Direct users to their nearest data center by using NetScaler appliances. Include the primary and backup XenDesktop Sites in StoreFront.

B.  Direct users to the primary data center by using NetScaler appliances. Span a single XenDesktop Site between the primary and backup data centers.

C.  Direct users to their nearest data center by using NetScaler appliances. Span a single XenDesktop Site between the primary and backup data centers.

D.  Direct users their nearest StoreFront site by using NetScaler appliances configured with high availability. Span a single XenDesktop Site among all data centers.

The correct answer is A. Here is the answer explained by Amit Ben-Chanoch, Desktop & Apps Product Manager for Citrix Professional Services:

It is not recommended to span XenDesktop sites across multiple data centers. This can cause lots of bandwidth across the WAN and increased latency between controllers and the databases. Answer A is the best option as using NetScaler for global server load balancing (GSLB) will direct users to the nearest data center where both sites can be aggregated.

Lastly, we have picked the two winners for the free eLearning courses from Citrix Education. They are Kelly Y. from the USA and Geza L. from Hungary! Congratulations Kelly and Geza!
