Map of Citrix Ready IaaS Cloud Providers

Cloud Providers across the globe are lighting up their datacenters with XenApp and XenDesktop. A global collection of cloud providers have verified their IaaS Clouds as Citrix Ready, easing deployment of XenApp and XenDesktop and addressing data sovereignty concerns.

With the launch of XenApp/XenDesktop 7.6, we are pleased to announce that CloudOps and Janz IT have joined Ennit server GmbH, MCPc and SSI in passing the verification test for the Citrix Ready IaaS Cloud for XenDesktop program.   Announced in January 2014, the Citrix Ready Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) Cloud for XenDesktop program gives customers the confidence that XenDesktop will run on a particular cloud operator’s infrastructure. A Synergy May 2014 announcement highlighted the following providers working on verification:  Datapipe, EVRY,, iNNOVO Cloud GmbH, Ikoula,  MK Netzdienste,  NTT Communications, PKN Datenkommunikations GmbH, SCSK, Verio and Zajil Telecom.  The list continues to grow with the latest launch of XenApp/XenDesktop, and includes BIS Business IT Solution GmbH, CloudCentral, enCloud, Intercloud Systems, LPS Integration, Reliable Networks, Teamix GmbH and Xand.

A global collection of regional datacenters addresses data sovereignty concerns

What’s notable about the list above is that it is comprised of providers from across the globe.  To see evidence of the geo-ubiquity of the cloud providers in the program, take a look at the map image above. Each yellow point of light on the map represents a Cloud Provider in the Citrix Ready  IaaS Cloud for XenDesktop program. Note that the pushpins on the map represent the corporate headquarters of each entity—not the datacenters—for security reasons. Many of these providers, like Datapipe, CloudCentral, NTT, SCSK, and Verio  have multiple data centers, so the actual physical datacenter locations that are certified for XenApp/XenDesktop deployment  far exceeds what we are picturing on the map.

Why does the geographic location of a providers datacenter matter? The advent of cloud computing has changed the way that we store and use data, and this in turn has raised a number of key legal issues around the retention of information including privacy,  confidentiality, security and even audit rights.  In response to this, many countries are regulating how and where customer data is stored. This concept of data sovereignty and  associated compliance requirements means that  sensitive data requires special attention when it comes to location and jurisdiction. Cloud providers  with regional/local datacenters, like many of those in the Citrix Ready IaaS Cloud program, can offer a sensible alternative to the mega cloud providers.

A new way of thinking about your XenApp/XenDesktop deployment

The benefits of running your XenApp/XenDesktop farm on  a certified cloud extend beyond that of datacenter choice. License portability and ease-of-deployment are other key benefits. As a Citrix XenApp/XenDesktop customer, you can contact any one of the Citrix Ready cloud providers and deploy your XenApp/XenDesktop server farm on the provider’s production cloud. This is a BYOL (Bring Your Own License Model) meaning that you simply use your existing XenApp/XenDesktop licenses, and purchase the infrastructure you need directly from the service provider. Purchasing infrastructure in this fashion helps reduce your capital expenditure, as you purchase only what you need. It can also help you adjust to business factors like seasonal demand for desktop capacity, or enable you to handle specific business cases like mergers or acquisitions.  Purchasing capacity in the cloud also means that you don’t have to endure the long budget/procurement cycle associated with purchasing servers yourself, and you don’t have to wait for the equipment to get racked and configured.  Cloud-based infrastructure is ready when you are. Support is simple as well—Citrix supports anything related to XenApp/XenDesktop  and the service provider supports the infrastructure components.

In summary: The Citrix Ready IaaS Cloud for XenDesktop program gives customers the peace of mind that a given cloud provider’s infrastructure is suitable for deployment of XenApp/XenDesktop. A growing list of verified providers gives customers choice when it comes to geographic location and level of service.

Author’s note

I’ve uploaded a KML file that contains a latitude/longitude for the corporate headquarters of each of the partners in the Citrix Ready program.  (KML is a file format that is used to represent geographic data in an Earth browser).   Download the Google Earth app and open the KML file I’ve shared in the application. You can navigate/browse/fly-around a 3D image with pushpins representing the location of the program participants.
