“We are very satisfied with the Citrix technology and support. Based on our success, I recommend using Citrix CloudBridge to colleagues seeking a cost-effective bandwidth optimization and acceleration solution.”
Siegwerk is a global manufacturer and supplier of printing ink for packaging and publications. Headquartered in Siegburg, Germany, the company has 70 locations around the world and employs 4,600 personnel. By working with clients to develop high-quality, individualized printing solutions, Siegwerk gives customers products that match their unique identities. With €1 billion in revenue, Siegwerk’s passion for developing customized ink solutions and providing expert advice on optimizing clients’ processes has helped the company become a leading ink supplier.
Supporting user productivity while minimizing connectivity costs
Siegwerk connects its global locations and two datacenters using a wide area network (WAN). To minimize costs, the company uses low-bandwidth connections ranging from 1 to 4 MBps. Larger facilities with more employees typically receive higher bandwidth speeds, while smaller offices use 1 MBps connections. After Siegwerk rolled out a new SAP enterprise resource planning (ERP) application, users in all locations experienced slow response times. “To ensure that everyone could use the SAP software, we needed to prioritize traffic, which reduced the application’s responsiveness,” says Christian Rolf, head of corporate IT operations at Siegwerk.
Accelerating application performance and prioritizing data flow
Siegwerk selected Citrix CloudBridge because it offered the best performance, technical excellence and competitive pricing. Because the company was already using Citrix XenApp, it wanted to choose another Citrix solution to help minimize IT infrastructure complexity. Today, Citrix CloudBridge helps Siegwerk accelerate, optimize and prioritize the flow of data traffic across the WAN. Key to the success of the deployment were experts from Citrix Services, who helped Siegwerk quickly identify and resolve a few early problems. “I was impressed with how quickly Citrix escalated our issue and how closely they supported us,” says Rolf.
Reducing connectivity costs
With the Citrix solution, Siegwerk is realizing new connectivity savings. For example, at the company’s Jakarta, Malaysia, office, the IT team deployed a 2 MBps connection for use with its WAN. By implementing the Citrix CloudBridge solution, Siegwerk achieved throughput comparable to a 4 to 10 MBps connection. “In choosing the less costly connection and deploying Citrix CloudBridge, we were able to save €10,000 to €12,000 per year, just for one site,” says Rolf. “Once we have completed the Citrix CloudBridge implementation across the enterprise, we anticipate savings of €200,000 to €250,000 annually.”
Optimizing bandwidth utilization
By supporting faster data flow and prioritized traffic, Citrix CloudBridge helped Siegwerk make the most of its bandwidth. For example, after deploying the SAP ERP software in the Malaysia office, the company sent numerous employees there for training. Thanks to the improved bandwidth, even the large training files required for the two-week course downloaded without delay. With the help of Citrix CloudBridge, the training was a success, says Rolf.
Increasing performance of enterprise software
By accelerating data flow, Citrix CloudBridge is helping Siegwerk enhance the responsiveness of the SAP ERP software. Even with its sophisticated graphical user interface, the new software did not struggle to run on the available bandwidth. By prioritizing the traffic across the WAN, Citrix CloudBridge helped Siegwerk enhance the user experience for employees who rely on the SAP application to perform their job responsibilities. “We have 1,500 SAP ERP users across the world,” says Rolf. “The Citrix CloudBridge devices are helping us improve the responsiveness of the software for each one.”
Siegwerk will complete its rollout of the Citrix CloudBridge solutions in the next few months. Based on the success of this deployment, the IT organization is planning its next step: to extend the use of its Citrix NetScaler Application Delivery Controller solution to handle load balancing for the company’s Microsoft Exchange infrastructure as well as perform load balancing for both its print system and client access to web services. “We are very satisfied with the Citrix technology and support,” says Rolf. “Based on our success, I recommend using Citrix CloudBridge to colleagues seeking a cost-effective bandwidth optimization and acceleration solution.”
