15 years… That is how long I have been implementing Windows remote display protocols (my first run with NT 4 Terminal Server Edition  was in 1999) and that is the same amount of time I have been waiting for a solution to enable high end graphics over a remote display protocol.

Flashback picture of the day…

15 years ofbeing asked “Can I run AutoDesk products in Citrix MetaFrame (or XenApp)?” or “How does Adobe PhotoShop run in Citrix XenApp or XenDesktop?”.  I’ve even been asked on more than one occasion if one could run video games on Citrix products (from the days of playing Doom, Quake and Diablo).

15 years of having to say “No, that application has too many demands on graphics and won’t work via the Citrix protocols even though they are the best out there.”

But the day has come!!! My answer has changed.

My answer now is “Yes, yes you can and it is powered by Citrix XenApp/XenDesktop and NVIDIA GRID cards.”

As a Citrix partner, my employer, Agile360 (a division of Entisys Solutions, Inc.) saw the potential in this solution when it was announced at Synergy 2013.  We were early adopters into learning about this solution and began ramping up our skills to deliver the combined solution from Citrix and NVIDIA.

On Thursday May 8th at 8:30AM @ Citrix Synergy in Los Angeles (Session: SYN248), Agile360 and our client, SpaceX, will be presenting the solution and findings from the SpaceX implementation of Citrix XenApp/XenDesktop with NVIDIA GRID cards.

As leader in technology, SpaceX saw the advantages of being able to virtualize the NVIDIA GPUs and Citrix XenApp/XenDesktop and were an early adopter of this solution to enable their engineers to more efficiently build rockets to get the human race to Mars (and hopefully back to Earth).

  • Learn about the NVIDIA and Citrix solutions and how other solutions were tested
  • Listen to how SpaceX was able to lower the cost of deploying engineering desktops while still delivering the same performance the engineers were demanding (and where they found other cost savings)
  • Find out where their users are located and their experience on the LAN and the WAN
  • We will have some demos and some tips to help optimize your experience with the Citrix XenApp/XenDesktop and NVIDIA GRID solution
  • Come learn about real world experience from a production deployment of the Citrix XenDesktop/XenApp and NVIDIA Grid solution

For fun. I recently checked out the Diablo III demo and I couldn’t tell the difference from my PC or my virtual desktop running in a datacenter 500 miles away!

If you are looking for some videos, check out NVIDIA’s Grid web site for videos on Google Earth or 3D Rendering applications: http://www.nvidia.com/object/enterprise-virtualization.html

Or better yet, try it yourself with the NVIDIA GRID Test Drive : http://www.nvidia.com/object/trygrid.html

Alright, time for me to go buy TitanFall so I can really test this solution out. See you at Synergy and hopefully at our presentation SYN248: Citrix XenDesktop and NVIDIA GRID enable SpaceX to colonize other planets (May 8, 8:30 am – 9:15 am).
