I’m always eager to talk to customers and partners about XenApp and XenDesktop. Today, I’m especially excited to announce XenApp and XenDesktop 7.5 is Release to Web (RTW) and available for customers to download!
In case you haven’t heard… XenApp is back! In fact, my colleague, Carisa blogged about the 12 commonly asked questions from a What’s New in XenApp 7.5 webinar she hosted last week. And in case you missed the live webinar, you can find the link to the recording in her blog.
That said, I do want to use this opportunity to highlight the key new features in XenApp & XenDesktop 7.5. Also be on a look out for up-coming blogs from my colleagues to go into each of these in more detail over the next few days.
Hybrid Cloud Provisioning. One of the most important new features in this release, applicable to both XenApp and XenDesktop 7.5, is the support of hybrid cloud provisioning. In this release of XenApp and XenDesktop, customers/administrators will be able to provision and deliver desktops and applications from Citrix Cloud Platform and Amazon Web Services. There are many different reasons why enterprise customers want to deliver apps and desktops from the cloud, from IT agility & datacenter flexibility to “Don’t Own Stuff”. Hybrid cloud provisioning is an important milestone for both XenApp and XenDesktop. You can learn more about provisioning to CloudPlatform and AWS from my colleagues.
AppDNA full feature set. As Citrix admins, we all recognize how time consuming and painful application validation process is, regardless if it’s from physical to virtual or migrating apps from one version of XenApp to the next. Whether you have a well-documented app validation cycle, or “3-strike” rule – if app doesn’t work in 3 tries, you skip that app, or light a candle, and say a prayer and hope the apps will just work…. One thing we can agree on is that… there must be a better way. At Citrix Synergy last May, we introduced the AppDNA-SBC module as a feature of Platinum editions of XenDesktop 7 and XenApp 6.5 Feature Pack. With the 7.5 release for XenApp and XenDesktop, Platinum edition customers will be able to benefit from the full feature set of AppDNA. Tim, product manager for AppDNA, will be putting a blog on how AppDNA feature can cut your app validation time and eliminate validation headache. So, look forward to Tim’s blog on March 28th.
RemotePC Access Wake-on-LAN. Remote PC Access has been a feature of XenDesktop for almost a year now. Customers love the fact they can use this feature to connect to physical PC’s at their desktop, from their Receivers, over HDX. The down-side for customers interested in this feature has been the lack of Wake-on-LAN (WoL) support. In XenDesktop 7.5, we now support WoL via Microsoft Systems Center. My colleague and Remote PC Access champion, Gabe, recently blogged about the WoL feature here.
Receiver & StoreFront Enhancements. Receiver & StoreFront 2.5 will also be enhanced to support XenApp & XenDesktop 7.5! Customers will be able to leverage StoreFront 2.5 with XenApp 6.5 for anonymous login, domain pass-through authentication, mandatory apps, smart card authentication and more. You can learn more about these new features from the StoreFront 2.5 blog here And I do want to point out that, we heard your feedback loud & clear – you need more time to transition your Web Interface environment to StoreFront. Hence, Citrix now supports Web Interface 5.4 deployed with both XenDesktop 7.x (7.0, 7.1 and 7.5) and XenApp 7.5. This support statement essentially offers customers additional 24+ months to make the transition, at a pace you & your end-users are comfortable with.
XenMobile Promotion! Finally, as a promotion to XenApp and XenDesktop 7.5, Platinum edition customers of these products will be entitled to XenMobile MDM at 100% discount (free) or 20% discount towards purchase of XenMobile Enterprise.
More to come! That is all for now. Don’t forget to come back the rest of this week to get a more in-depth look into the features highlighted here. Separately, I will circle back in next couple of weeks with more information on some of the exciting things engineering is working on… so, stay tuned!
