One of the most frequent questions I’ve been asked since Citrix acquired VDI-in-a-Box is how will we handle migrations from VDI-in-a-Box to XenDesktop. While a license migration path has existed since the beginning, migrating the software itself was a very manual process.
Considering that VDI-in-a-Box is a Linux appliance, and XenDesktop is installed on a Windows Server OS, there were certainly many challenges when considering a migration from one to the other, but for those who have already upgraded to the latest version of VDI-in-a-Box, you may have noticed a new icon sitting on your admin tab called “Migrate to Citrix Studio”.
With VDI-in-a-Box 5.4, we have enabled administrators with a wizard driven interface to assist with migrating a VDI-in-a-Box deployment to XenDesktop. This wizard will export some or all of the VDI-in-a-Box golden images for use in the XenDesktop deployment, as well as generate PowerShell scripts to create Machine Catalogs and Delivery Groups in Citrix Studio that matches the template settings and user assignments in the VDI-in-a-Box environment.
This new functionality enables VDI-in-a-Box administrators to seamlessly grow their environment to fit their needs without the worry of needing to completely rip out their existing environment and start over from scratch.
VDI-in-a-Box customers can download version 5.4 now at the Citrix product download page. Everyone can try the new version by downloading the free trial. Product documentation is available on Citrix eDocs. And you can always go to the VDI-in-a-Box Support Portal for all VDI-in-a-Box technical information.
