As I mentioned in the announcement blog for out XenApp 6.5 Connector Service Pack, we would share some of our plans and timeline for support for XenDesktop. That time has now come!

We have several goals for our XenDesktop 7.1 Connector that we believe customers will find valuable:

  • Support XenDesktop 7.1 (Bruin) and Microsoft System Center 2012 R2 Configuration Manager
  • Provide app deployment, inventory, and desktop integration for the XenDesktop 7.1 Server OS Instances.  This is equivalent to the XenApp Connector functionality for XenApp 6.5
  • Enable a single SCCM site to manage both XenApp 6.5 farms and XenDesktop 7.1 Server OS instance sites (RDSH)
  • Simplify the installation and configuration for the Connector

So what does this mean?
If you are deploying XenDesktop 7.1 and using the Server OS scenario (Published Applications/Published Desktop) you can use Configuration Manager and our Connector to:

  • Manage the deployment of MSI and App-V packages to the Server OS instances
  • Make sure that apps are only deployed during Configuration Manager maintenance windows
  • Create and manage Receiver / StoreFront application publications from within Configuration Manager
  • Keep your PVS and MCS master VMs up-to-date using Configuration Manager, while making sure there is correct application deployment behavior to PVS/MCS Server OS machines
  • Support for Delivery Groups and machine catalogs

Is there anything this amazing piece of software can’t do?
For this initial release of the XenDesktop Connector, we are not planning to support Client OS scenarios (VDI).  We will continue to evaluate this for subsequent releases and we would love to hear your thoughts about this.

When can I start evaluating the new XenDesktop Connector?
We plan to have a Tech Preview available later this quarter that you will be able to test some of our core functionality.  We will use your feedback from the upcoming Tech Preview to improve the product and help us determine the right mix of features and release date. Stay tuned to Citrix Blogs for more details.
