Coming on October 23rd 2013, on the heels of Microsoft’s latest Windows platform release, Citrix is releasing XenDesktop 7.1, which will add support Windows Server 2012 R2 and Windows 8.1. Customers eagerly awaiting Windows Server 2012 R2 for its new multi-tenant-aware storage and networking capabilities, and Windows 8.1 for improved mouse and keyboard navigation will be able to take advantage of these features immediately. A tech preview of XenDesktop 7.1 is available now for download.

Microsoft is releasing platform updates faster than ever and Citrix is in lockstep to take advantage of the latest capabilities in Windows Server, System Center, and HyperV to help you deliver Windows-as-a-Service. With the XenDesktop FlexCast Management Architecture – from a single site and a single console – customers can now support three generations of Windows Server from Windows Server 2008 R2 to the new Windows Server 2012 R2 as well as 16 bit, 32, or 64 bit apps through a combination of Microsoft Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8, or now, Windows 8.1. FlexCast technology flexes with your needs – from mobilizing Windows apps and desktop refresh to BYO laptops and tablets. It enables enterprise IT to deliver Windows-as-a-Service – always on, highly secure and seamlessly mobile – from simple VDI to advanced app delivery. It is easy for IT and flexible for today’s complex, mobile workforce.

XenDesktop 7, released in June, brings the power of XenApp into the new FlexCast management architecture for ultimate flexibility. The new architecture, and the introduction of HDX mobile, reflects the growing trend among the modern workforce to move back and forth across multiple devices on and off the network. The new HDX mobile capabilities were built for translating apps built for a mouse and keyboard to any touch screen device. Any Windows app can immediately take advantage of HDX mobile, but applications can also be modified with the new HDX mobile SDK. With the SDK, Windows developers can further optimize the experience for screen size and orientation and even integrate local cameras, accelerometers, and GPS capabilities to develop new apps. Of course the advantage is that the app itself and it’s data never leaves the data center delivering high transactional performance and the ultimate in mobile security.

XenDesktop is an open platform designed to be deployed on any hypervisor or cloud management solution such as Citrix CloudPlatform, Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Windows Azure. Citrix is proud to be one of the first Microsoft partners to bring support for our world-class desktop virtualization solutions on the Windows Azure cloud platform. Combined, Windows Azure and Citrix XenDesktop offer the best cloud for Windows workloads and the best solution for delivering high performance, scalable and secure Windows workloads to any user.

More than ever, Microsoft and Citrix are better together: The tight integration of XenDesktop with Windows Server, Hyper-V, System Center and now Windows Azure extends IT flexibility to dynamically deliver apps and desktops from the cloud, as well as private datacenters to users anywhere, on any device.
