Connecting end users to the data they need can be puzzling. Knowledge workers end up with important files stored across a number of locations depending on where they created the document and whether it is part of a team project. Consumer-oriented cloud storage options provide a convenient way to store and share files, but there are also important documents on laptops, mapped home drives on the network, Microsoft SharePoint team sites, and other enterprise content management systems. As users embrace mobile devices, how do they stay productive across all those different back-end repositories?

Today I’m happy to announce that Citrix, which Gartner recently gave its highest possible rating of “strong positive” in the Enterprise File Synchronization and Sharing market¹, now provides a key piece of the puzzle for unifying and simplifying the way users access and edit their documents: mobile access to existing network drives and SharePoint document libraries through ShareFile. These new capabilities extend the flexibility ShareFile offers for hosting data in the cloud or on premises with StorageZones.

With the new Citrix StorageZone Connectors feature, mobile users can connect from iOS or Android phones or tablets to ShareFile data, existing CIFS network shares and SharePoint document libraries. Combined with the mobile editing capabilities in the ShareFile app, mobile users can be highly productive while on-the-go:

  • Browse SharePoint document libraries and download documents to the mobile device for offline reading
  • Check out, edit, and check back in SharePoint documents
  • Upload or download documents from network drives, including the same network “home” drive they use in their XenApp or XenDesktop environment, right from the mobile device

As an end user on a mobile device, the ShareFile app presents me with a unified list of data sources that can include native ShareFile data (hosted in the cloud or on premise), network drives such as my department network drive or home drive, and SharePoint document libraries that are relevant to my role:

As an administrator, I can pre-populate the list of SharePoint sites and file shares that users see when they log on, and set access permissions according to user group:

StorageZone Connectors for SharePoint and CIFS shares will be generally available by the end of Q2. If you are attending Synergy this week, please stop by the ShareFile booth in the expo hall for a live demo!
