The uncertainty of application compatibility is one of the biggest road blocks to any Desktop Transformation project. In the past I’ve seen this lead to inaccurate information being presented to stakeholders. This in turn can potentially lead to budgetary and timeline blowouts. And if you overestimate from the start, projects can be shelved because the business cannot see the return on investment. That was the old way!

AppDNA helps takes the guess work out of the Application Compatibility piece of the Application Migration puzzle. Even those of us that are old school, and love getting our hands dirty fixing application issues, have to admit that AppDNA is the new way; the most efficient way; the most cost effective way; the best way!

Citrix made a significant change to the licensing model last October with the release of version 6.1 SP1, when they allowed you to import and analyse as many apps as you want within the 30 day trial period. This will give you access to two high level reports; one being the Estate View, and the other being the Effort Calculator. The trial license also allows you to unlock the reporting and fixes for up to 5 Windows apps and 5 Web apps. The Estate View alone is gold.

Picture this. There’s talk of a Windows OS upgrade project or Application Virtualisation project looming. You download, install and configure AppDNA. So simple and wizard driven, you’ll have it done within a couple of hours. Then you just start pointing AppDNA to the location where you store your application source files. There are a number of different ways you can do this. You’ll then be able to analyse the apps. This may take a while, depending on the number of apps and their sizes. You don’t have to import every app, just focus on the ones that you know are going to spawn conversation and FUD. Once that’s complete you will get a high level Estate View report that YOU can present to stakeholders in the kick-off meeting. Furthermore, you can choose to unlock and report on 5 Windows apps and even 5 Web apps, just to tease them and put them under your spell. You can then run them through different simulations via the Effort Calculator, allowing them to see an estimate of the number of resources and costs for this piece of the puzzle. This is a far more constructive approach for these meetings, and makes you look way cool.

You could quite simply say that AppDNA is to an IT Consultant as a paperclip is to MacGyver.

AppDNA

Come to the Citrix Synergy session that Warren Simondson and I are co-presenting “SYN328: Learn why AppDNA should be a part of every consultant’s toolkit”. We’ll talk about things like:

  • The Application Migration approach and where AppDNA fits in.
  • What is an application?
  • Shims – What do they do, and why aren’t they used more frequently?
  • 3rd party tools AppDNA can leverage off.
  • What does AppDNA test for?
  • Grouping apps based on business units or pilot groups.
  • Best practices.
  • The reports, such as Overview Summary, EstateView, Application Issues, Application Actions, Remediation, Forward Path, Effort Calculator.
  • Flexibility within the configuration so that it can be deployed in larger organisations, or ones that have a devolved management model.
  • Some demos with real world apps.

AppDNA is the common sense approach to your Application Compatibility testing, helping you to take back control of your application portfolio.
