If you’ve downloaded Citrix XenServer you’re one in a million, or soon to be. That’s right, since Free XenServer was announced in 2009 it has been downloaded almost one million times and, with the recent release of XenServer 6.1, we’re approaching that milestone fast.
Several key trends in today’s server virtualization landscape have led to this high level of adoption;
Commoditization of server virtualization solutions- The hypervisor market is no longer a one horse race, giving enterprises more choice when it comes to choosing their main virtualization platform. In a recent blog Gartner’s Tom Bittman stated, “Imagine how the virtualization market would be different if the server virtualization trend was starting today. VMware’s competition has greatly improved in the past few years, and price is becoming a big differentiator. Enterprises that have not yet started to virtualize (and they exist, but tend to be small) have real choices today.” For the last 2 years Gartner has recognized Citrix as a leader in their Magic Quadrant for x86 Server Virtualization alongside both Microsoft and VMware. Similarly, Info-Tech has noted Citrix as Champion in their Vendor Landscape Plus: Server Virtualization saying, “XenServer provides the most comprehensive all-around solution for the price”. More and more organizations are choosing XenServer for all the features they need at a fraction of the cost.
Multi-hypervisor environments- Info-Tech also discusses a phenomenon that we’ve seen growing over the last few years and expect to increase even more in the near future, and that is companies running more than one hypervisor. This is further validated through research conducted by the Aberdeen Group; in their blog on the subject they noted organizations use an average of 2.5 hypervisors in their datacenter. They go on to say they believe “that companies will be constantly evaluating and re-evaluating hypervisor choices as new versions and features are released by vendors”. This is not a “one size fits all” scenario. Whether you’re virtualizing heavy duty enterprise applications, desktop workloads or a test/development environment, choose the correct platform for your workloads. Sure, it requires a bit of research, but with the cost savings that can be achieved through this sort of exercise you owe it to your organization to take a look at what’s out there.
Cloud Computing- Is it a buzz word? Yes. Is there a lot of marketing fluff out there around this? Yes. Still, cloud computing is fundamentally changing the way IT organizations function today. Hugely flexible and infinitely scalable clouds need to be built on a stable, cost effective platform, and do you know who these companies choose? XenServer. Today XenServer powers 80% of hosted and public clouds including customers like Rackspace, Carpathia Hosting, 1&1 Internet and Softlayer. So, if you’re looking for a platform that is proven at not just hundreds or thousands of hosts, but tens of thousands of hosts, look no further than your friendly neighborhood XenServer.
