For the past few weeks on the Citrix Facebook page we’ve been asking people to show us their Top 5 Essentials for Working on the Go. We received hundreds of submissions – you can check out some of our favorites here – but in the end, only one was worthy of winning the Ultimate Working on the Go Prize Package of:
- Two $1,000 United Airline travel vouchers
- Toshiba Portégé® UltrabookTM with Intel® CoreTM i3 Processor
- Verizon JetpackTM Mobile MiFi® Hotspot with two-year contract
- One-year free subscription to Citrix® GoToMeeting
- Plantronics® Stereo Headset
The winner, George M. from Jupiter, Florida, has been a fan of Citrix long before the days of Facebook. It all started 15 years ago when George decided to purchase stock in Florida-based companies, Citrix included, and he has been following the vision and growth of the company ever since.
George’s winning submission (pictured above) immediately caught our attention, so we just had to ask him more about the life of a modern-day mobile firefighter:
Tell us about your job.
I’m a firefighter with Miami-Dade County. I hold the position of Captain.
What’s a typical day “working outside of the office” like for you?
Outside the office, I run typically fourteen to twenty emergency calls in a twenty-four hour period. They are mostly medical calls and fire calls, but they can be as simple as alarm ringings or stuck elevators. When I’m not running emergency calls, I’m responsible for surveys and company training. I spend a large portion of each tour out of the office.
Why is it important for you to stay ‘connected’ while working on-the-go?
For work, my life and the lives of others depend on staying ‘connected’ at all times with fail-safe and redundant systems–either through radio, tablet, or 3g connection to the fire truck laptop. There are so many facets of what we do that demand that we maintain constant connection to those who support us. Those dispatchers and logistics people give us resources and additional help when we need it. They keep us safe and often times are thinking one step ahead of us. They are our tether to safety, security and so many other things. I can’t imagine how much more dangerous our job would be without these tools that we take for granted now.
Personally, I’m out of my office/firehouse so much, that it’s important that my wife can contact me while I’m out (sometimes for 3-5 hours at a time). We have two small children and the ability to ‘connect’ with her, if only for a moment, is very important to me.
What are your plans for the Ultimate Working on the Go Prize Package?
My wife and I will probably use the vouchers for the four of us (I have two young boys). I’d like to see Colorado in the summertime. As for the tech stuff, I plan on retiring my old laptop and using the ipad, the headphones and mifi hotspot for downtime at work. The Toshiba laptop will be my work computer. I’m about a month away from launching an indie t-shirt company called Hook & Irons.
Congratulations to George and thanks to everyone who participated in the Top 5 Essentials for Working on the Go contest! Be sure to ‘like’ our Facebook page for more fun in the future!
