2011 was our most significant year in terms of XenServer momentum yet and we applaud Gartner for recognizing that. In the past 12 months, we’ve surpassed 100,000 customers and are quickly approaching 1,000,000 downloads of XenServer Free edition. We feel this placement by Gartner analysts is recognition of the strategic relevance of a flexible virtualization platform in the Citrix portfolio and rewards our efforts with a placement in the leaders quadrant. While it’s easy to assume that server virtualization as a category may be something as narrow as Enterprise server consolidation, we believe Gartner correctly views server virtualization as a set of workloads:
Gartner Defn: The x86 server virtualization infrastructure market includes all x86-based workloads (i.e.,application, Web and database servers; hosted virtual desktops [HVDs]; file, print and security servers) deployed on standard x86-based physical servers.
At Citrix, we have been driving XenServer deeper into the market by optimizing for workloads and engineering a platform for next generation use cases. By Gartner’s own admission, the server virtualization market has matured and enterprises are now considering multiple virtualization solutions. This is a significant change in this market and one that we’ve been anticipating. Users are no longer looking for a generic platform for consolidation, rather virtualization that best matches their application needs. In line with Citrix virtualization strategies I’ll share two data points to illustrate some of the favorable shifts we are benefiting from:
- Desktop Virtualization – XenDesktop is the industry leading Desktop Virtualization solution – XenServer powers the significant majority of XenDesktop deployments
- Public, Private and Hybrid Cloud Services – Xen/XenServer powers 4 out 5 largest clouds – over 50% of top 20 public clouds and over 80% of CloudStack clouds
There are clearly some mega-trends that are playing in our favor at Citrix and the above data points are the result of having executed on a strong vision. Having just returned from a week with the XenServer engineering and product management team, I am looking forward to upcoming releases that should only accelerate this momentum. Thanks to everyone who has downloaded XenServer, posted in our forums or mailing lists, encouraged others to use it, contributed code or even had a kind word to say. You are playing a role in the success of this platform and we appreciate it.
