AppFlow is the core Application performance visibility feature supported in NetScaler ADC. AppFlow defines a new segment where you can extend the visibility aspect all the way from Network layer to Application layer. For network level visibility most of the Network Performance Management tools rely on Netflow/IPFIX protocol. AppFlow extends the network layer visibility aspects to Application layer by extending the IPFIX record format to accommodate Application layer information. For most of the application scenarios you may want to get visibility inside time taken for TCP connection establishment, time to first byte, total transaction time, round trip time, page render time, page load time and other client/server statistics. All of these data points can be provided using AppFlow records and data which can be exported from NetScaler in runtime.
While we built this exciting module, it was important for the Application Performance Management tools to understand the AppFlow record format and be able to generate useful reports. Thus we worked with key APM vendors like Splunk, Solarwinds etc. and enabled those tools to understand AppFlow records for application level performance monitoring.
When we look at the fastest growing Cloud infrastructure today, there is a clear need for monitoring and performance management at all layers. With NetScaler being the leading Cloud Networking platform it adds lot of value to have the visibility factor driven by the AppFlow module within NetScaler. The key areas where AppFlow can be useful in your Cloud deployment are:
- Visibility inside the Cloud Network
- Health Monitoring for key components
- Access Control, Auditing and Security
- Performance Monitoring for key components
- Troubleshooting the Cloud deployment
