Dell announced today the immediate availability of an integrated VDI appliance that uses Citrix VDI-in-a-Box to make virtual desktops as simple as assembling building blocks. The Dell DVS Simplified appliance will be sold through Dell’s sales force and channels.
Why is this significant? Because by coupling a simple, affordable, and repeatable solution with the leadership position that Dell has in the desktop market, we are now able to reach millions of customers that want to take advantage of the mobility, efficiency and flexibility that desktop virtualization offers.
The appliance makes VDI simple and affordable by combining the grid architecture of VDI-in-a-Box with the efficiency of Dell servers. By using the all-in-one design of VDI-in-a-Box, the appliance eliminates the need for separate connection brokers, provisioning servers, load balancers or external storage. VDI-in-a-Box is factory installed on the server, as is the hypervisor. Each appliance is validated and rated with the number of desktops it can serve. You simply snap together as many of the appliances as you need to grow capacity. Leveraging the efficiency of Dell servers, the price tag per virtual desktop is under $500, making the solution very affordable. And, this price includes three years of support and maintenance. Equally important to the simplicity of the solution is the business element – how can we make it easy for businesses to purchase and consume the solution? Over the past year, Dell has been successfully reselling VDI-in-a-Box and the best practices developed through this effort have been applied to selling the appliance. The result is a complete offering around the product to simplify the end-to-end experience. Dell is offering validated solutions around the appliance – including affordable pre-packaged services and support offerings, validated vertical solutions such as virtual labs for Education, and related products such as thin-clients, peripherals, etc that have been verified to work with the appliance. In addition, we have expanded the popular Citrix Ready verification program to VDI-in-a-Box, so that over 1 billion devices and peripherals are validated to work with the virtual desktops.
It is this perfect combination of the technical and business aspects that has us very excited about the impact this appliance will have in reshaping the desktop virtualization market. Dell, the leader in the desktop market, just took a major step to make virtual desktops easily consumable by every business.
