A month ago we announced Citrix VDI-in-a-Box at Synergy Barcelona and provided you with ready access to the beta version.  As of yesterday the general availability version is now here … a Citrix branded all-in-one simple solution for all of your VDI needs.  And again, what sets it apart is that using just off-the-shelf servers and without any shared storage, you can create a production caliber VDI solution with high-availability, on-demand scalability and the rich user experience from HDX.

Many of you have been clamoring for Hyper-V support.  Well it is now here.  You don’t need VMM and you can use the completely free standalone version of Hyper-V.  We’ve also added support for the latest XenServer (also free!) and the latest vSphere ESX, ESXi .  And it  includes the latest HDX 5.5 stack with its improved performance, lower  bandwidth requirements and expanded device support with the latest Citrix Receiver.   For details on the features in V5, see my earlier blog: /blogs/2011/10/24/new-citrix-vdi-in-a-box-5-%e2%80%93-easy-vdi-big-roi/

I would love to get your feedback, especially from those who have used the prior versions.  I’d love to hear what you like or don’t like about the new UI.  So please go to the download pages (https://try.citrix.com/storection=DisplayPage&Locale=en_US&SiteID=citrixtr&id=QuickBuyCartPage), pull it down and give it a go.

Now of course with the arrival of Citrix VDI-in-a-Box (VIAB), there are lots of questions around when to use it versus XenDesktop (XD).  Is it usage based?  Is it based on number of seats?  Is there a trade-in path?  Last week, I spoke to Gabe Knuth of BrianMadden.com to answer these questions. In a nutshell, it’s usage based.  If you need simple VDI use VIAB.   Otherwise go with XD with its flexcast offering.  We are going to be providing a license trade-in program for those who start with VIAB and later want to move to XD so that we can protect your investment.  We will announce this in 2012 but if you buy VIAB before the trade-in is announced we’ll still take care of you.
