As I was inching along in rush-hour traffic on the Highway 101 last evening, I watched with envy as one hybrid car after another zipped along in the car-pool lane sporting Clean Air stickers.

This reminded me of a simple fact – when it comes to automobiles, we all know that one-size does not fit all.  Why then, when it comes to desktop virtualization, should we expect a single solution to meet the needs of all users?

Over a year ago, when Kaviza was still a standalone company, one of the reasons we  partnered with Citrix was because of their mission to deliver desktop virtualization for every user.  Citrix understands that different users and businesses have different desktop virtualization needs, and  may require different solutions.

As we are integrating Kaviza into Citrix and gearing up to launch our first Citrix-branded product at the end of this year,  some of you are asking about the future plans for VDI-in-a-Box and how it relates to XenDesktop – will it be a separate product, for whom, and will there be a license  upgrade path between the two, etc.   While it’s still early to give specifics, let me share with you our overall goal and  integration approach.

In our experience, Small and Midsize businesses have very different priorities than enterprises even though they are both interested in the same benefits of desktop virtualization. SMBs have simpler requirements but are very budget and resource constrained, and are looking for easy, affordable, packaged solutions.  For enterprises, which tend to have more users and hence more complex requirements and correspondingly greater IT resources and budgets, the priority is more on flexibility and customization.

Our mission at Citrix as the newly formed SMB Solutions group is simple – to offer the easiest, most cost-efficient and best desktop virtualization solution that fits the needs of SMBs.  This is complementary and different from the mission of XenDesktop – which is to offer the most complete and flexible desktop virtualization solution for enterprises.  Flexcast in XenDesktop enables different virtual desktop delivery models for enterprises including VDI, streamed, mobile (XenClient), and shared (XenApp) desktops.  VDI-in-a-Box delivers a VDI desktop with an affordable backend purpose-built for SMBs.

Both products fit in the Citrix portfolio, and each is focused on the priorities of its target market. However, our ultimate goal as a company is to deliver choice and flexibility to customers, so they can pick the option that best fits their needs.  While we think most customers will pick based on their size, if a customer were to grow up with VDI-in-a-Box and later need XenDesktop, Citrix will work with them to address this need.

We are excited to be a part of the Citrix family and are working hard on our first Citrix branded version of VDI-in-a-Box.   If you are coming to Synergy Barcelona, please attend our sessions on VDI-in-a-Box where more will be revealed.
