While doing my Desktop Transformation projects, I am often asked the same questions over and over again.

Questions like:

  • What would be the best design according to you?
  • How would you do this, if you got free hands?
  • If time and money didn’t matter, what would you do?
  • What would be the best approach?

And you know what; the answer is plain and simple. I can design a large XenDesktop FlexCast solution with my eyes closed, in bed and sleeping, and do this better than most other people, because I have done this so many times before.

Fair and simple?

Well………actually NO, I could do it (promise) but that would be the biggest mistake in history, and let me explain why.

Cause, as soon as I have done it, I would get questions, questions like:

  • What about this
  • What about that
  • And have you thought about this or that

… and therefore there is no such thing as a golden design that can be delivered in this way, it is just a dream and should stay as such. However there are guidelines and recommendations that one could use, but in the end it would still be necessary to have the requirements well defined. And unless you know what the customer wants to achieve (business requirements) it will be very hard to find the “golden design”, the perfect match, the design over all designs.

Now, if the customer doesn’t know what they want, then it becomes a challenge, you would fumble in darkness, and unfortunately this happens as well (sometime more often than one would wish).

Is there a solution to that? Of course, you have two (2) options.

  1. Try to NOT get yourself into a situation where there is a lot of uncertainty (wrong option for a consultant)
  2. Do a Desktop Transformation Assessment (DTA). The DTA basically covers everything you need to do.

The DT will help you take the customer to the next level, and the positive side effect is that it will also make you look good – onsite that means 😮

If you do not know what a DTA is and what it includes, I highly recommend you to sign up for the ->Synergy Barcelona<-, and join our Consulting sessions which will inform you about the Desktop Transformation Model as well.

And for Part 5 “Ask the Architect” that is your time to shine.  Make us speechless, please! 🙂

The Desktop Transformation Model, Part 1: Assessing business needs to build a desktop transformation

The Desktop Transformation Model, Part 2: Start with a foundational design and build from there

The Desktop Transformation Model, Part 3: Design storage the right way

The Desktop Transformation Model, Part 4: Design and deployment tips to deliver the best user experience

The Desktop Transformation Model, Part 5: Ask the architects

Now, when talking designs, there are some golden rules of course -as I mentioned earlier, for example you should always aim towards building a solution that is scalable and modular, which will allow for future growth, as I call it a flexible solution! These rules and guideline will be discusses as well in Synergy, and this is primarily why you should join my session with Daniel Feller.

SYN307: The Desktop Transformation Model, Part 2: start with a foundational design and build from there

This session will provide you with what you need to know to be successful in the field.

You all know that we don’t have that luxury in the IT business to do many mistakes, correct? And most of you are not employed by companies where you can get away with everything; I assume you can and usually will be held responsible for your acts!

Trust me, what YOU do in life echoes in eternity – that is the hard life of an IT Consultant.  Mistakes will be spotted, marked and poked at.

So be sure to take the opportunity to increase the success rate, and allow yourself to get the best possible start for your Desktop Transformation Projects. It is an opportunity you do not want to miss.
