With the release XenApp 6.5 and XenDesktop 5.5, there are several new features that will significantly improve the user experience.  If you would like to learn more about these then I encourage you to be in beautiful Barcelona on Wednesday October 26, 2011 at 4:30 PM as Ivan Lorente and I co-present session SYN309 “The Desktop Transformation Model, Part 4: Design and deployment tips to deliver the best user experience”.   Synergy Barcelona is going to be an excellent event to learn about many of the new and exciting features that will greatly improve the user experience!  You can register for the event at the link below:

At our Synergy event in San Francisco this past May 2011, I presented session SYN348 “Wow to How Part 4, delivering a Delightful Desktop Experience”.  The session focused on some key things that should be done to ensure that a virtual Windows 7 desktop performs well for end users.  You can find a detailed blog on some of the session material or catch a replay of the session on Citrix TV at the links below:

Three of the key areas that I focused on in the session included the following:

  • Progressive Display
  • Flash Redirection
  • Application Streaming and RadeCache issues

All three of these items have received major upgrades with the release of XenDesktop 5.5 and XenApp 6.5 as described below:

  • Adaptive Display.  Progressive Display has been enhanced and replaced with Adaptive Display in XenDesktop 5.5. And it is now turned on by default!
  • Flash Redirection v2.  Flash Redirection has been enhanced to work better over WAN connections and will now even work with Linux end points!
  • Application Streaming VHD Mount.  Remember that pesky RadeCache that had to be copied down to all of your desktops and the storage headaches that it caused for non-persistent VDI?  Well, RadeCache can now be   replaced with shared VHD mounting directly from the App Hub!

If you want to learn more about these features and how best to configure them for improving the user experience, then you need to get to Barcelona in October for Synergy 2011!  I know you are all probably disappointed that you will have to travel to Barcelona for Synergy 2011 as opposed to some other sunny location (like Houston Texas), but I am sure that in addition to getting updated on all the latest and greatest virtualization technologies from Citrix and our partners, you will find plenty of other great and productive things to do while there!  I look forward to seeing you in Barcelona!
