One of the HDX enhancements in XenDesktop 5 is a new webcam video compression technology that works in conjunction with the 12.0 and 12.1 versions of the Citrix Receiver’s online plug-in for Windows. Tony Sanchez does a great job demonstrating this in the following video from Microsoft TechEd: Tony also demonstrates a Polycom USB phone. For the demo of Lync (new name for Microsoft Office Communicator) on XenDesktop 5, skip ahead 7 minutes. But of course you might want to watch the whole video, which starts with an impressive preview of RemoteFX integration with XenDesktop.

XenDesktop 4 introduced webcam support to desktop virtualization a year ago. So what’s new with webcam support in XenDesktop 5? The big improvements are in bandwidth consumption and network latency tolerance when using your webcam with Microsoft Lync. This new technology consumes an order of magnitude less bandwidth for the upstream video, in the range of 300 to 600 Kbps. And it can be used even at trans-oceanic latencies.
