Why do people insist on buying 3rd party products instead of actually making use of the functionality they already paid for? This goes for hypervisors but also for a lot of additional tooling. Let’s face it, how many companies are actually making use of the power of Active Directory or the full power of XenApp? It seems we rather buy 3rd party products to do all of it for us. Perhaps it has something to do with a graph I saw in a presentation recently:

Mind you there are a lot of 3rd party products which actually add value but bear in mind it’s the cost we need to compare against the value they offer. More often than not I see offers go out the door which look like a Christmas tree with all the bells and whistles one could possibly imagine. However all this just makes it look like our V-Alliance solution is too expensive.

Please tell me what you think is missing which warrants an upfront investment other than hardware. I mean there are a lot of technologies here which are all developed to leverage each other, to embrace and extend for that matter. All we need to do is understand them and see beyond the traditional boundaries.

So the real question we have to ask ourselves is do we invest in knowledge or do we invest in products.
