Customers consolidating servers to virtual machines are looking for a more cost effective application environment – to maximize CPU and memory utilization without sacrificing application performance or data security.  While the need for security in a virtual environment is no different than the need in a virtualized environment, the challenge is much different.  Trying to place security software on dozens of virtual machines, each of which sits on the same physical server, creates unacceptable application performance.  So how do you solve this puzzle?
Today at the Citrix Synergy conference in San Francisco, McAfee is announcing its Management of Optimized Virtual Environments (MOVE) platform, which will provide world class security to virtualized environments.  We are delighted to be partnering with Citrix, a world leader in the provisioning and management of virtualized environments, to solve the business need for securing the endpoint in virtual desktop deployments.  The MOVE platform allows McAfee to do what we do best – securing customers, keeping their data safe, and maximizing application performance for virtualized environments.
Partnering with Citrix is a benefit for our joint customers.  Citrix is a world leader in virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) and we hear from many of our customers that they want to take advantage of XenDesktop and do it in a safe and secure fashion.  A partnership that brings best in class VDI with world class security is a win-win situation for all customers.
We are currently in development with Citrix to offload security management from individual virtual machines to a dedicated security server.  Offloading includes “on access” scanning as well as “on demand” scanning, which dramatically improves the performance of the virtual environment.  In early tests we are seeing a dramatic increase in virtual machine density – rather than 32 virtual machines running on a physical server with endpoint security installed, we are able to move that up to 90 virtual machines – a performance increase of 181%.  There is also a better than 10x improvement in CPU and memory utilization, which will serve our joint customers well.
We designed the platform to grow with our customers.  As the needs of their business increase they will be able to add new security controls with the MOVE platform to continue to provide protection as they scale.  Customers will also be able to manage all this with simplicity from McAfee’s ePolicy Orchestrator (ePO) just like they do today, so consolidated security management across virtual and physical environments is a reality.
