Transcript : 888 – How To: Create a VM Template and Deploy using XenDesktop Wizard Description: This video will walk you through the steps of creating a blank template within XenServer. The template consists of a Virtual Machine with no hard drive and little memory. Once the template is created, the XenDesktop Wizard will be used to create Virtual Machines from the newly created template. Moreover, the Virtual Machines will be configured within Active Directory, Citrix Provisioning Services, and Citrix XenDesktop. Running Time: 10:18 Hello. My name is Frank Nicosia, and this is another exciting episode of Citrix TV. Today, I will be creating a new template and deploying it using XenDesktop Wizard. One of the greatest functionalities of XenDesktop Wizard is that it allows you to automate the process of creating virtual machines, and then deploying it through XenDesktop. Let’s launch the XenCenter 5.5. To create a virtual machine, we will need to right click on the XenServer and specify New VM. In the list of templates, we’re going to scroll to the bottom of the page and click on Other install media and click Next. The new template will be called TemplateVM. We’re going to keep some of the default settings within the new VM Wizard, such as initial memory, which is, by default, 256. But you could increase this if you would like. Also, there’s a virtual disk that you can add if you would like. For this demo, we will not be adding any virtual disk to the VM template. Also, the interface, network interface cards. If you would like in your environment, you can add an additional network interface. Before we click on Finish, we’re going to uncheck Start VM automatically. As you can see, the TemplateVM has been created as a virtual machine. We’re going to convert this into a template by right clicking on the virtual machine and specifying Convert to Template. The process was really fast. As you can see, the TemplateVM has been created. Before we start running through the XenDesktop Wizard, let’s verify some of the options within our environment. In Active Directory Users and Computers, let’s create a new organization unit. In the root of the Xen…Active Directory Users and Computers, we’re going to click on New, Organization Unit. We’re going to call the new organization unit DemoXD and click OK. In the DDC, you’ll notice that the farm name for the Desktop Delivery Controller is named NewFarm. And within the Desktop Group, there’s only one group, XDgroup. In the Provisioning Server services console, the farm name is called Farm. And as you’ll notice, within the Device Collections, there’s only one device collection called XDgroup. And also, within the Provisioning Server console under Stores, we have only one store called vdisk. We have a list of vDisks within the vdisk store. The most important one, which we’re using today, is called Windows2003. As you will notice, it’s the only one in standard mode. To determine that the vDisk is in standard mode, or change it to standard mode, you will need to right click on the vDisk and go to Properties. Click on Edit Files and specify the Mode tab. Within the Mode tab, you will notice that Access Mode is specified Standard Image. Also, the Cache Type is very important, which we’re caching on the server disk. So I’m going to click on OK and OK again. We will start the process of running the XenDesktop Wizard tool. To launch the XenDesktop Wizard, we’ll click on Start, Programs, Citrix, Administration Tools, XenDesktop Setup Wizard. Here we see the Welcome to XenDesktop Setup Wizard, and we’ll click on Next. The Desktop farm corresponds with the Desktop Delivery Controller farm. Here you will see it’s named NewFarmName. NewFarmName. We will click on Next. The Host Infrastructure is Citrix Xen VM infrastructure. The address is http://10.12.33.121. To verify this is the correct IP address, let’s look at the XenServer Management Interface. Let’s click on XenServer and the General tab. You will notice Management Interface. The primary IP address is 10.12.33.121. Let’s click Next. We are logging in to the XenServer at this time. Here are the virtual templates within XenServer. The template we created earlier is TemplateVM. Let’s select that template and click Next. The vDisk that appears is Windows2003. As you will notice, in the Provisioning Server Console, there are 6 vDisks, where the one that appears is the Windows2003. And the reason why it appears, it’s in standard image mode. Let’s click Next. The VM that we are going to be creating is called vm. We will be creating about 5 desktops, starting with the number 1. At the bottom of the screen, you will notice: With the information you have entered 5 desktops will be created, the first desktop will be named “vm1” and the last will be named “vm5.” Let’s click Next. In the custom OU, we will be selecting the Browse key. In the domain, we’ll be selecting Demo XD, clicking OK. Let’s click Next. Create new desktop group. We’ll be calling this DemoXD. Let’s click Next. In the summary screen, you will notice that the template is TemplateVM, the vDisk is Windows2003, device collection is DemoXD, the Active Directory OU is DemoXD, the number of virtual disks is 5, the common name is vm, the starting number is 1, and the desktop group name is DemoXD. We are starting to create all the VMs. As you will notice on the left-hand side of the screen, vm1 through vm5 has been created. Here’s a little summary. 5 of 5 desktops were created successfully. Each successfully created desktop consists of a virtual machine and a Provisioning Server vDisk. You can also click on Details for more information. Desktop vm5 successfully created. Virtual machine successfully cloned. vDisk successfully provisioned for the virtual machine. Click Close. And Finish. We have finished running the XenDesktop Wizard, but let’s see what we have created. In the Device Collection, you will notice a new object called DemoXD. You will also notice each of the VMs were created, vm1 through vm5. In the Delivery Controller, you will see a new Desktop Group called DemoXD, and all the VMs have been created successfully, vm1 through vm5. In Active Directory, under the organization unit DemoXD, let’s refresh this organization unit. You will notice on the right-hand side, vm1 through vm5 has been created. XenDesktop Wizard is an exciting tool, which automates the process and decrease the time to install and configure virtual machines within a working environment. This concludes the presentation for XenDesktop Wizard.
