Why is HP's lifecycle on thin clients 3 years?
We purchased HP gt7725 thin clients for our organization with the promise that they would last us 7 years and would be supported for that lifecycle. The gt7725 had pretty advanced tech (and still does to this day when compared with devices on the market today). It also supports quad-head displays which work nicely with the population of traders we have. However, recently, when we asked to have updates provided to support the latest Citrix Receiver with the HP ThinPro release on the thin client, we were heavily pushed to abandon this thin client even though we only purchased them 2.5 to 3 yrs ago, and to move to t610's to get the updated software. When we mentioned that we would like to continue using the gt7725, we were told it's EOL. When we pressed for answers on the extended lifecycle of HP thin clients, we were told they are treated in similar fashion to PC's. So... A "head scratcher" was created as to whether we should ever deal with HP and their thin client division again as they were quite oblivious to the very definition of what a thin client is. I would never recommend their products unless you plan to modify and update the thin client software yourselves outside of HP's support cycle. Long story short, we ended up modifying the HP ThinPro image to support the latest Citrix Receiver 12.1.2 and customized it to our liking because we have strong Linux expertise here and expect that HP will come back again to push us to buy more kit even though the older kit performs just as well. Figured I'd ping this review for all enterprises interested in purchasing these devices. Keep an eye out on lifecycle and support as it's quite skewed compared to Dell WYSE's support lifecycle on their devices. -
