Citrix Acquires XenSource
Citrix announced on August 15, 2007, that it was entering the adjacent server and desktop virtualization markets through a definitive agreement to purchase XenSource. Enterprise Management Associates (EMA) believes that this move will extend Citrixs broader Application Delivery strategy, establish Citrix as having the most comprehensive virtualization offer¬ings in the industry, and further its claim to being the leader in virtualization technology.

Citrix Acquires XenSource
IDC analyzes the impact of Citrixs intent to acquire XenSource and the impact the deal will have on the virtualization market, as well as the impact and potential opportunities this creates for the vendors competing within this space. IDC notes a strong synergy between the two companies stating, We think that the acquisition of virtual machine software technology rolls into Citrixs product portfolio well, particularly in terms of Citrixs new application delivery story. Virtual machine software is a key component of the future application delivery environment.

InformationWeek Praises XenSource Deal as Source of Credentials for Citrix in Virtualization Market
In a report on Citrixs agreement to acquire XenSource, Information Week called the virtualization market red hot and indicated the deal would give Citrix stronger virtualization software credentials for new products that manage user desktops as virtual machines instead of physical PCs. The article also spotlighted the IT industrys current excitement over virtualization solutions, as exemplified by the run-up in share value for VMware, a server virtualization solution provider, during its IPO. Citrix CEO Mark Templeton was quoted about the huge untapped potential in the virtualization market.

Associated Press Reports Citrix Anticipates XenSource to Generate $50 Million in Sales in 2008
Citrixs agreement to purchase XenSource, a start-up company offering virtualization technology, headlined this article on the growth of the virtualization market. Customers want the technology, which helps computers harness more of their unused processing power and unleashes applications from a single machine in a data center. In fact, as stated by Citrix senior VP David Jones, many Citrix customers were clamoring for virtualization products. The article also covered the recent and highly successful VMware IPO, described as a much-larger rival of XenSource.

According to InfoWorld, Citrixs Acquisition of XenSource Will Strengthen Relationship with Microsoft
InfoWorld covered Citrixs agreement to acquire XenSource, a three-year-old company that provides commercial and open-source flavors of its virtualization technologies. The deal, expected to close in Q4, will allow Citrix to take a significant share of the overall virtualization market by 2011, according to CEO Mark Templeton. The article pointed out XenSources close ties with Microsoft, also a Citrix strategic partner. XenSource remains committed to ensuring interoperability between its own virtualization products and Microsofts virtualization hypervisor, currently code-named Viridian.
