How It Works
An overview of the Citrix Delivery Center

Citrix Delivery Center works much like the delivery systems in satellite and cable TV, with a simple, scalable infrastructure built on a few key elements: head-end delivery controllers, endpoint receivers, gateways and repeaters that enhance and secure service delivery between the delivery center and user. The Citrix Delivery Center product family applies these same principles to provide an end-to-end system for delivering IT as an on-demand service.
Delivery controllers
Citrix Delivery Center includes purpose-built delivery controllers to manage and control the delivery of applications and desktops to users and the delivery of server workloads to virtual and physical servers within your datacenters.
- XenDesktop centralizes and delivers desktops as a service to users anywhere, reducing desktop TCO up to 40 percent and improving data security by revolutionizing desktop lifecycle management.
- XenApp virtualizes and manages Windows applications in the datacenter and delivers them as an on-demand service to users anywhere using any device.
- XenServer rapidly delivers server workloads across virtual or physical servers making it the ideal virtualization platform for every server in the enterprise.
- NetScaler makes Web applications run five times better, improving application availability, increasing security and substantially lowering Web application delivery TCO.
Receivers
Receivers are components that reside on the users devicePC, Mac, thin client and mobile devices like iPhones. Citrix Delivery Center includes Citrix Receiver, a lightweight, extensible, auto-updating client framework with a plug-in architecture that transparently controls plug-in management, including updates and notifications. Citrix Receiver dramatically simplifies the user experience for applications and desktops delivered by Citrix Delivery Center.
Gateways
Citrix Access Gateway SSL VPN sits at the edge of the corporate network to allow secure access to applications and desktops. Integration with the delivery controllers (XenApp, XenDesktop and NetScaler), a key differentiator of the Citrix Delivery Center, provides administrators the ability to control both application access and application actions, like printing or cut and paste, based on the user, the endpoint device and the location.
Repeaters
Repeaters optimize delivery of applications and desktops between the datacenter and branch or remote offices. Citrix Branch Repeater, the first branch office in a box, optimizes application delivery by staging applications and desktops closer to branch users, speeding dynamic data over the WAN and integrating key native Windows branch infrastructure services.
